It probably is just a section test and the entire screen will be lit.

When is opening supposed to be again?

It's a moving target. They've pushed back opening dates at least twice (originally it was slated to open in mid August). Now the thinking is sometime in Oct or Nov. No firm date as of now, though.

I saw the opening listed as "late fall" somewhere on a Fairmont site a while back. It doesn't seem like they know for sure.

Wow, looks like they might not open in time for F1, that's a good amount of money right there they will be missing out on.

I decided to take a drive to check out the lighting. They only have a few lower roof panels lit red but they aren't changing. It looks like each vertical row will have individual LEDs, I'm assuming there's a lower row for the bottom half of the screen and another row for the upper half. So they will have quite a range of coloration styles if it's being set up that way. Actually it's basically what I wanted to see for 3rd & Colorado's crown. Looking forward to the end result.

They work fast, it was up lastnight. Also they were testing some blue and purple lighting.

Was the lighting on the spire itself or just the roof screen?

I saw the blue lights on part of the screen last night. Subtle, but nice. I'm sure they'll go all the around the building when they're done.

Over Austin @overatx

Sorry for the huge size. Fairmont's red light is on the right side of this photo.

Spire just had the spotlight. I do not think that's the final lighting considering we saw lights on the spire itself before.

They will and they will have an amazing array of coloration styles. This may end up being the best lit building in Austin IMO, (Frost is great too but would be better with color)

The lighting will make up for lack of building height and design. It would be funny if someone was monitoring this thread and took note of our comments lol.

It really is what I was hoping for and I love that each vertical lighting is individually controlled so they could essentially have rainbow colors across the entire roof screen.

Sorry for the reflection from my dash board. But if you look closely you'll see a purple light below the blue light on the left. That's what I mean by two rows of individual LEDs. They were red night before last.

I always thought that just the lights from the hotel rooms lit up, especially when they are near full occupancy would be impressive. If this is as good as we hope, it could add just a touch of Vegas to the night skyline. Now to destroy any minute credibility I might have, my favorite lit up structure in the downtown area has always been the FEC when its completely lit up especially when the marquee is animated, at least from I35.

OK. Are your sure you didn't mean feces?

EDIT: I can't wait for that place to be torn down. I don't remember the exact demo date, but it seems like Phase II of the Dell/UT Med Center is on the slow track.

Pretty sure. I guess I'm the only fan of this building? Forgive the off topic, I only mention this because we all like lit up things at night that change color and this qualifies.

I like the drum. My high school graduation was there, as I expect many others had their's there, too.

I like seeing it lit up at night with that burnt orange glow. I always remember seeing it lit and Fox7 always pointing their tower cam at it. It's an Austin icon. I'll be sad to see it go.
