Oh, on the contrary, I think they've been bad dogs.

However, I still think they should be relocated. Already got used to humans and can't hunt? Too bad, they need to relearn how to survive in the most remote part of the province, and fight for survival like other wild coyotes.

As expected the City takes the cheapest and most convenient way out. Kill them off. It is kind of like how the homeless and drug addicts are treated here. Not giving a hoot or just giving them free drugs. That will take care of them, eventually.

Apparently relocated coyotes rarely survive as they are highly territorial and will be killed by other coyotes. There's obviously something unusual at work in Stanley Park.

....."The Stanley Park issue is more complicated than normal situations," she said. "There's always a constellation of events that lead to these … no one is the key cause here."

Alexander said in all the cases she's studied across Canada, 100 per cent of the coyotes were either hand fed or food conditioned.

"That's a precursor to an attack," she said, adding that in Stanley Park there's "definitely chronic feeding."

But that wasn't the only issue Alexander noticed.

"I looked at some of the maps and there's displacement of coyotes from their normal area of living by the homeless encampments," she said.

"These animals have now been pushed into fringe areas where they're more in contact with people and more likely to get into conflict."

Alexander said there may be even more severe reasons behind the animals' erratic actions.

"The behaviour of some of these individuals suggest they've ingested toxins or drugs, possibly opioids. There's also some indication of possible abuse of these animals," she said....

If coyotes are attacking people in Vancouver, nothing is fixed by spending millions to have the same coyotes attack people in Prince Rupert. Sure, it sucks that we're catching the non-habituated ones in the crossfire, but it's the least bad solution.

It really shows just how pampered and removed our culture and society has become from true adversity when people need to make a vigil for a coyote infestation.

Sure they are cute and look like dogs, but they are dangerous, not endangered, and not suitable for an urban park.

Culling them now means killing less after a couple more breeding cycles when things will really get out of hand.

Not everything can be happy rainbows in order to keep a society healthy and safe.

Especially when some of the people at that vigil were likely the same people who used dog food to attract the coyotes so they could take a pic for the 'gram, thereby compounding the issue.

I am not upset at the cull, but I am pissed that people have been feeding the coyotes or leaving trash around the park that attracts wildlife. Humans and animals can coexist, but we can't abuse the natural environment and not expect adverse consequences.

This article says that the coyotes have been displaced by homeless campers from the deeper regions of the park into areas more commonly frequented by people.
It also suggests that coyotes may be foraging on the homeless campers' garbage tainted with drugs.

Is aiming to be a yearly program with such success.
