The Clocktower tends to draw a much older crowd, doesn't it?

Anyone know why Sussex is turning into a ghost town lately? Almost every ground level store from Clarence to Murray (or even St-Patricks) is empty or closing

Not 100% sure, but I think those buildings are all scheduled for renos by the NCC.

Best Buy in South Keys, without a lease, closing its doors April 16

The Ottawa Citizen
Published on: April 8, 2016 | Last Updated: April 8, 2016 6:47 PM EDT

The South Keys Best Buy store will close later this month after the company was unable to renew its lease.

In a statement, Best Buy Canada said it is “disappointed” it has to close the store at 2210 Bank St. on April 16 because it couldn’t reach a “reasonable” lease agreement with the landlord.

“We have communicated the closure to our Ottawa South employees and are working to find them as many positions as we are able to accommodate at nearby Best Buy locations,” the statement said.

The inventory left over after the closure will be taken to nearby Best Buy stores.

The South Keys location was recently converted from a Future Shop to a Best Buy after the company announced last year that all Future Shop stores in the country would close.

Best Buy Canada, the company that owns Best Buy and owned Future Shop, said the Merivale Road, Kanata and Gatineau Future Shop stores had closed.

The company planned to convert three other Ottawa locations — South Keys, Orléans and Barrhaven — into Best Buy stores.

As many as 500 full-time and 1,000 part-time jobs were lost as a result of the consolidation.

Best Buy Canada is a subsidiary of Minnesota-based Best Buy Company, which bought Future Shop for $580 million in 2001.

I wonder who will move in that Best Buy store on South Keys? It sounds to me like the landlord wants to increase the rent and BB didn't want to go along?

Or BB wanted a reduction in the rent.

There was a thread on Reddit about Best Buy closing that mentions Winners/Marshalls. There's already a winners at South Keys, so it could be Home Sense, or they could be shuffling their stores around for a bigger space.

I would have thought a Best Buy would be a major draw for a mall

I think Best Buy was a major draw but the landlord found someone else to pay more in rent. I also heard the rumour that Winners is either expanding or a Homesense is coming. They could also close the Winners and use both spaces for a large Marshall's - which seems to be expanding quite a bit. That Best Buy was the closest electronic store for Carleton students and there is significant population in that area - doubt they wanted to close this store.

Cabela's building for fall opening

By Adam Kveton
Kanata Kourier-Standard, Apr 10, 2016

Construction on the Cabela’s store is well on its way, seen here through falling snow in late March.
The developer for the retail area located west of Tanger Outlets, Taggart Realty, has said that the outdoor outfitter is expected to be open this September.
However Cabela’s Incorporated would not be as specific. A communications person for Cabela’s said, “We have not announced the official opening date of the Ottawa store at this time. We are on schedule to open this fall.”

I drove past this on the weekend - had no idea progress was this far along! Any idea what they are building to the east of this on Campeau? Across the street from the Outlet's traffic light intersection. That building's steel beam frame seems to be almost complete. Thanks.

Bleeker will be closing. I wonder who's next in the audio/video/electronics sector?

Sorry to see them go. Another Ottawa institution gone.

Besides car dealers, are there any other remaining Ottawa specific retailers going back to the 1960s?

Good question. First example I could think of is Ritchie's feed and Seed. They go back further: 85 years according to their website.

Foster's Sports Centre actually dates back to the 60s, but that's pretty small potatoes, though.

Hold the phone. Stop the presses.

Giant Tiger / Le Tigre Géant.

Done.

For the record, I'm sad to see Bleeker go. Always had great service there, and they managed to keep their prices competitive with the big boxes. I was the second generation in my family to do most of my electronics shopping there. Bought a washer from them just over a year ago. Better price, faster delivery than the boxes, and careful installation, too.

I bought a 4K Sony from them in October. I could have bought it online or from bestbuy - but I wanted to have a personal relationship with the store should something go sideways.

The guy I bought from, who is now the salesmanager, sold me my first Sony worldband radio back in 1989.

My parents bought 40" Sony LCD TV from them 10 years ago. It still works.
Wow time flies.

Le Chateau will close a number of stores in the near future, they have a good presence here so I wonder if any local store will be affected?
