Downtown was CRAZY today. Tens of thousands of people on both Robson and Georgia, more thousands of people on all of Granville. I walked all the way down Robson, then walked all the way up the seawall to the convention centre, where there are TENS of thousands of people. Every single street is packed. Every single restaurant had lineups. Every single store was busy. The weather is beautiful, you couldn't ask for a better day.

You cant help getting caught up in the buzz downtown. Regardless where you stand on the games, it's about celebrating Canada and being proud of our beautiful city - you just can't help yourself. We are going to really shine next week with the sun shining.

I have a feeling you haven't seen anything yet. Wait until the hockey tournament starts.

Then people will be flooding downtown to watch on the screens. Go to the pubs, restaurants, etc.

Supposedly there are hotel rooms available up until the 16th. When the tournament starts.

Hmm, neither of these statements indicate whether support is tepid or not... the statements are about completely different issues than support.

Even if the games are for the elite members of society, which I don't believe for one second, People just don't think of the incredible enhancements to our infrastructure that the games have brought.

Expo 86 ran at a deficit as well, but it gave us things like the Expo Line, Canada Place, and BC Place. And that was a multi month event. The games, for a 2 week party have left us with much, much more in terms of investments in the local infrastructure.

The games aren't about turning a profit. This isn't Ferenginar. It's about shining the light of attention of 3 billion people on Vancouver. Most of the cost of the events are paid for by private sponsors and ticket sales. The government is paying for stuff that we get to keep for many years. But if the government loses a bit of money now, the Province will make it back ten fold over the next few years.

These numbers do not reflect support for the games.

You can support the games and still think that the Games will run a deficit.

For those who have not been downtown and experienced the celebration going on, I must repost this high-quality live feed from Robson Square:

http://www.yougottabehere.com/new_events_centre/robson_square_live_concerts_and_entertainment

Looks like a party!

Also, with the good weather today, Vancouver and Whistler are looking spetacular on NBC and CTV primetime coverage. (Lot's of beautiful, glossy skyline and mountain shots taken from the land and sky.) And the men's moguls competition on Cypress is looking great on TV. Massive crowd and tons of excitement.

When the sun comes out, MAN does Vancouver look good.

I hope people will post their photos and videos of their experiences of downtown Vancouver during these Games.

I went for a HUGE walk today, leaving my house in Grandview, through the DTES (stumbled upon a protest, hehe), on to Canada Place, then to Coal Harbour, West End after that and up Robson then caught the bus home and one thing I can say is HOLY EFFING CROWDS! It's nice being in the action but I can only stand the crowds and line-ups for so long. I heard a 5 hour wait for the zip line? No thanks, I'll stick to taking pics!
Speaking of pics, I got lots but you'll have to wait...

Haha, yeah 5 hours. I knew they should have charged a bit for it. The lineup to skate at Robson Square is obscene, too.

The Art Gallery lineup is a couple of hours, the Mint is lined up for about an hour...

Lineups are a sport of their own. Luckily Japanese people, who make up a lot of the tourists, excel at waiting in ridiculously long lines, and often look forward to it.

There has to be well over 100,000 extra people downtown right now. Every street is booming. It's awesome!
