I love the Mac-Blo building. One of my favourite office towers in Vancouver.

I would like to see Vancouver build two office towers and put them in the same area as the Shangri la. One at 210 meters and another at 235 meters. Also, I was looking at the numinous webcam at night and it seems as if they have completed half of the interior work of the tower.

Little off topic but has anyone noticed the concrete crumbling on the MacBlo building, there is exposed rebar in some places...not good. My guess is this building is going to be torn down within 10 years. Unless they can safely and cost effectivly fix it. Or is Exposed rebar not a problem?

I have seen the rebar too. I would not think it is any cause for concern. Maybe some patch work is in order, if that is possible. The concrete waffle is awesome, i doubt they would tear it down any time soon.

There was a bunch of patch work done a couple years back on the black "Sierra" buildings along Hastings which appear to be of similar construction style.

The old MacBlo Building will be a heritage building - it'll never be torn down.

I hate ooking at old vancouver skyline pictures. makes me realise how dull the skyline really was without additions like Melville, Woodwards, and especially shangri-la. without shangri-la it would still be boring. the 600 footer across the street should bring even more impact.

I love looking at them because they show how far we've come as a city.

You are right, without Shangri-la and Shaw the downtown skyline would be quite boring, although it is much denser than it was 20 years ago.

Couple updates from today:

Bamboo:

The stairs are metal as opposed to concrete; I'll reserve judgement until I walk them, but it looks okay. I think it would've been cool if they built of wood, although there would be obvious maintenance issues and costs.

From Georgia:

And because I couldn't leave without a shot of the tower...

great shots!

an aside: damn, does vancouver ever need to widen its sidewalks. the sense of dislocation is a little absurd.

I agree about the rain. I don't get what you mean by "sense of dislocation" though. Maybe because it's Monday morning.

I am always hugging tight against the building to go under the awnings, the worst part is when there is a break between two buildings! In such a rainy city you would think there would be more fully covered sidewalks and even streets. I was sad to hear they cancelled the Robson Clamshell roof. People made such a big deal about it, as if it were some monster idea that had never been done before, but if you go to Japan (where winters are also cool and can be rainy) they have giant skylight roofs over many commercial areas.

According to AlexYVR, there is another fire going on at the Shangri-La.

Yes indeed - Smoke coming out of all Georgia/Thurlow/Alberni doors directly under the tower, men (women, actually) in orange vests radioing to get everyone out, etc. I am guessing a small electrical fire.

it's a good point, but people have umbrellas. anyway, the reason is proportion. not to get off-topic, but there's something that feels sort of weird about walking on these dinky little cement sidewalks. it just seems shabby.
