He wants real-time info on where trains are on the line so he can identify trains by model and resume the exclusivity of travelling only by means of MK I's.

We went over this a few times. TransLink refuses to allow that for something about security or or terrorism or something stupid which makes a little sense but is an unlikely stretched out scenario.

Escalators at UW light-rail station keep breaking down;
Sound Transit will improve them — and open a staircase

By Mike Lindblom
Seattle Times staff reporter

The U District Station opening in 2021 will also be redesigned to include stairs to the train platform instead of depending entirely on escalators like the UW and Capitol Hill Stations do currently.

A 45 minute wait at the platform level to use the elevators? That sounds frustrating.

Rather than that and the new wristband Compass devices they are testing, I'd rather see train arrival times like Evergreen and Canada Lines have.

For that, I think we'd all vote Yes to a tax increase.

Citing safety concerns, he chose not to allow people to walk on stalled escalators like a staircase, as allowed in rare circumstances in Vancouver and Los Angeles.

"rare" 😂

That's in-progress, although I'm not sure exactly what the current status is. Requests for Proposals went out last year, and it had sounded like they were aiming to have the new signs up by Q2 2018, but evidently not. It was not quite as simple as replacing the signs themselves, there was also a bunch of software setup to do.

I checked and it's actually in the article.

This spring, Rogoff declared a policy to open the north-side emergency stairs when lower escalators fail at UW Station. Citing safety concerns, he chose not to allow people to walk on stalled escalators like a staircase, as allowed in rare circumstances in Vancouver and Los Angeles.

Rogoff revealed previously that years ago, the agency ordered standard commercial escalators for UW and Capitol Hill stations instead of buying the toughest available “transit-grade” escalators. From now on, only transit-grade escalators will be ordered, his staff said.

By the sounds of it they are worried that because they are the wrong grade they might break under the extra load. How cheap-ass can you get?

Because some penny-pincher up in accounting said:

"Why are we paying this much for escalators? These ones here in the catalogue are cheaper. They do the same job; buy these instead!"

Yup. What North Americans don't seem to get is that their transit planners work on a shoestring budget and so most of them already lean towards thrift - but "no, surely there's a way to do it even cheaper," so we get clustershags like this. Fiscal responsibility my hairy asscrack. More like miserliness.

Can't blame the transit planners when you have politicians who would rather cheap out on vanity projects or (in the case of Republicans) spend taxpayers' money on building more highways.

We have our own version of this in the underbuilding of the Canada Line.

Still better than the Surrey LRT. The S-Curve design on the L-Line is so hideous it makes the Edmonton LRT look favorable in comparison. At least the Canada Line is separated from car traffic.

There are quite a few things nobody should cheap out on. Like sushi.

It would be interesting to see what the difference in the components are and the pricing.

Kone's commercial model has 100,000 service hours where the heavy duty ones can go up to 200,000 and duty cycles up to 24 hours a day.

There's this document from the American Public Transit Association on design guidelines for escalator's:

Good (or bad) news -looks like the RapidBus concept is dead. More specifically, axed and repainted as plain ol' B-Line buses.
