I also keep forgetting this is on the go, as it is such a disappointing project. I hate that six lanes will require a separate multi-million dollar project down the road, rather than few cans of paint. BC continues its long-standing commitment to build to the lowest spec and waste taxpayers' money to fix it soon after.

close it should be "The BC NDP aka little Johhnie Whore-again continues its long-standing commitment to build to the lowest spec and waste taxpayers' money to fix it soon after."

Isn't it closer to the truth that scopes are being cut in order to line union coffers? "Community benefits" indeed. What a bald-faced lie that moniker is: the community suffers while unions bloat.

That worked out REEEEEEALLLLY well for Illinois.

A few recent pictures of the main tower foundation here, according to this post the first concrete pour should have been last week.

Ya gotta love the scale of it. Both verticals, cap, and re-bar diameters.

It's so boring about all bridges looking so similar. While Pattullo has been an awful bridge to cross, it has its own charm as an old steel bridge.

I still with Port Mann would have a LED lighting on it.

I was kind of hoping they'd throw an homage to the original Pattullo by making the cables orange and have blue lights up the main tower.

I sent them a message that I'd like them to use similar colours on the new bridge - it wouldn't hurt for other people to do the same thing.

Some lighting effects would be welcomed.

All the major bridge structures around where I am in Japan have lighting effects.

I feel infrastructure here is far more welcomed and celebrated by the culture, while in Canada it is more a desire for infrastructure to disappear and be unseen. I find that sad.

I imagine a big part of it is also "where the fuck does the traffic go in New Westminster?"

Dumping 6 lanes into an already deathly-packed urban centre isn't the best idea. If we were to go for a higher capacity bridge, we should consider putting it in a different location.

That's easy. There are 4 through lanes on both sides and the 2 extra lanes would be for merging traffic from the crazy busy Columbia Street. With how it is now being built, there is going to be a congestion from merging traffic on both ends of the bridge, just like today. Traffic flow will still be nonexistent and collisions will be plentiful.

Now, you cannot compare a First World Country to a Second World Country.

I have always thought that Pattullo's orange arch is part of New Westminster's postcard image, so it is weird how there hasn't been any opposition to such a mundane bridge design. Of course I do realize that if it would be up to New Westminster, there would not be any bridge to replace Pattullo.

tonight I am in Whalley and I could hear up until 10 pm-ish bang bang bang coming from the pile driving of the bridge.

As for lighting this would be great.

Is Japan or Canada the second world country?

I cannot imagine the complaints that would come out of both Surrey and New West if this were planned. China might have the blessing of being able to play Sim City with their cities, but it comes as a result of suppression of dissent.

I remember the fluorescent tubes in the side rails on the first Port Mann bridge - they used to induce all kinds of bad reactions when some of them died and you had these flashing dark and bright bars zipping past you at eye level. They were eventually forced to replace them with standard street lighting on utility poles...

Lots of bridges in Japan, Korea, Australia, the US and Europe have such lighting effects, doesn’t need to be in a nation that suppresses dissent.
