From the press release

Posted on June 14, 2019 by Hamilton International Airport.

News Release

Quote:
Four-year, $38.8 million infrastructure project will support continued cargo and passenger traffic growth.

HAMILTON, ON (June 14, 2019) – John C. Munro Hamilton International Airport will undergo an Airfield Rehabilitation and Modernization Project to fully restore its two main runways, supporting taxiways and lighting systems over the next four years, starting in 2019. These projects will improve the efficiency, reliability and safety of airport operations, accelerate investment to accommodate the increasing use of larger wide-body aircraft for domestic and long-haul traffic to support current and future growth through Hamilton International.
Quote:
The investment of critical transportation infrastructure includes four major elements:

Strengthen the Airport’s primary runway: Runway 12-30 is one of Southern Ontario’s longest runways, and investment will facilitate current and future heavy freighter traffic. Rehabilitation of instrument landing and low visibility systems will improve overall reliability.

Strengthen the Airport’s secondary crosswind runway: Investments will be made to improve the efficiency of Runway 06-24, which serves as the alternative approach and departure path for diversion flights during inclement weather.

Upgrade taxiways systems: The airfield’s support system of taxiways connecting to the runways will be upgraded to accommodate growing 24/7 aircraft operations.

Upgrade airfield lighting: Advanced LED lighting technology will be implemented on the airfield to improve reliability, promote efficiency and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

The total project cost is $38.89 million, and Transport Canada’s National Trade Corridor Fund (NTCF) will contribute $18.54 million, with the balance funded by airport operator TradePort International Corporation, as part of its capital investment plan. To minimize closures and interruption to existing 24/7 operations, airfield work will be completed in phases.

Hamilton International is an economic engine for the City of Hamilton and the surrounding region. Its latest Economic Impact Study demonstrated that in 2017, the Airport generated almost 3,500 jobs in the region (a 25% increase since 2013), labour income of $243 million, a GDP of $385 million and industry activity of $1.2 billion. Through the investment announced today, these Airport projects will create more than 350 construction jobs, with an additional 863 full-time jobs to be created over the next five years, representing an additional $149 million in labour income. The Airport anticipates that the NTCF’s investment will facilitate approximately $2.1B in economic activity annually.

“Supporting taxiway systems”

Does that classify as new taxiways being constructed or just current ones being restored?

Was hoping for a lengthening of runway 06-24. Guess that will have to wait.

Interesting, I just saw this sale and that swoop flies out of Hamilton. Debating taking advantage of it but i don't know anything about the airline, and I've heard some of the cheap carriers hammer you with extra fees.

Swoop is an ultra-low cost carrier (ULCC). When you buy a ticket, you get a seat and seat belt. You pay for the rest. Each bag and carry-on bag has a charge. Only a single personal bag if free. You pay for your seat selection. All airlines but Southwest charge for a seat. You pay for your meal and coffee (you can take your own on board).

When you search for a low price, you have to add all of your costs not just the flight. You have to add your seat, bag(s), meal, parking, type of transportation to the airport, time on the road to get there and your return trip etc…

When you book with any low cost carrier, make sure you read all of the fine print, all of the rules including when check in closes, when you should be there, baggage rules etc. and you won’t have a problems.

If you expect nothing but a seat and seat belt, you will not be disappointed.

I am off to Halifax in July and I am paying, everything in, half of what Westjet, Porter and Air Canada was charging just for the airfare. Flair was a couple dollars cheaper but travelling out of Toronto is more expensive in total and they were not daily. I lost a day on my trip. I am paying for 4 tickets so there was a considerable saving to fly Swoop out of Hamilton.

This will be my 4th trip with Swoop since they started. 3rd to Halifax and a trip to Tampa.

I have yet to be disappointed!

Thanks, that's good to know, and it could definitely be cheaper for a lot of situations. Thinking of checking out PEI this summer because I've never been, and it sounds like this could be a solid option for the flight to Halifax, as long as we don't pack too heavy.

I'll add that I've never been disappointed with Swoop so far. Especially when I'm flying outside of Canada to the USA, the customs department at YHM is great as you actually get to speak to humans and not some self-service machine. The only thing that sucked is that I got soaked getting out of the plane to the customs department tunnel (it was raining like cats and dogs)

I'm hoping they return YHM to Tampa for the Fall/Winter schedule since that will be my next destination.

I'm flying with Swoop in 2 weeks to Las Vegas, I hope everything goes well so that I can repeat the experience afterward.

I don't think this is bad for YHM. This is a sort facility to as they state "allowing it to deliver more packages quickly. Purolator, which delivered more than 25 million packages in 2018, said that the facility will triple its capacity, and help it deal with higher volumes of deliveries during peak periods.". This is for local service and they are building a facility 110,000-square-foot facility in North York which will add up to 135 new delivery routes. The packages and mail will come into this sort facilities by large trucks from all over the world. They will go out in the same trucks with some coming to YHM. The vast majority of this stuff will come into YHM in aircraft shipping containers in large trucks to go directly onto the plane.

CargoJet has a long contract with Purolator (and Canada Post and DHL). I am sure they are talking to them about their needs. CargoJet buying more aircraft, hanger space at YHM and is looking to build more buildings at YHM. You may still see Purolator expand at YHM.

Swoop has release its winter 2019-20 schedule. It goes to April 26, 2020. Its only new destination in Los Cabos, Mexico, form Edmonton and Winnipeg. They are adding more sun routes from Winnipeg, Edmonton and London, Ont. There is no new destinations from Hamilton but everything is back from last year. 11 Destinations and 44 flights a week. I suspect it may change as they will be accepting the delivery of three more aircraft by the end of 2019, bringing their fleet total to 10 Boeing 737-NG 800s.

Hamilton and Abbotsford Daily except Saturday
Hamilton and Winnipeg Daily except Thursday
Hamilton and Edmonton Daily except Saturday
Hamilton and Halifax Tuesday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday
Hamilton and Las Vegas Monday, Thursday, Friday & Sunday
Hamilton and Orlando Monday, Wednesday, Thursday & Saturday
Hamilton and Tampa Bay Monday, Wednesday & Sunday
Hamilton and Cancun Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday
Hamilton and Fort Lauderdale Monday, Friday & Saturday
Hamilton and Puerto Vallarta Wednesday, Friday & Sunday
Hamilton and Montego Bay Wednesday & Saturday

Are these aircraft still coming over from WestJet? If so, with the Maxes being grounded over at WS, there is no spare aircraft at the moment so how can it afford to transfer three more frames over to Swoop this year?

Apparently they are coming from Westjet this year. I guess time will tell and we will see what the new owners do!

Now that Air Canada will take over Air Transat I'm afraid they'll leave the smaller airports, including YHM, for the main airports.

It'll probably take two or three years before Air Transat is fully transitioned over to Air Canada so we probably won't notice any difference.

Here they grow again...in #hamont! As part of a $30 million multi-phased investment, work is now well underway on a major hangar for @KfAero at @flyyhm. ✈️

Drove past this on Hwy 6 today, heading south for a long day-tour. Impressively large.
