They are suppose to be doing work on the information system...new digital speed limit signs and notification sign along with adding all the fiber optic cables needed.

Actually, I think they are improving the signs including travel times through Mobile on I-10, I-65 to I-165, and tunnel/bridge traffic so people can be aware of any congestion or heavy volume to go around it on 65/165. Baton Rouge has it and I use it a good bit to change my route through the city on the interstates.

thanks for the updates, cottoncity and southsky! i haven't gone anywhere as far as the website is concerned. i still check in on the mobile threads every couple of days or so. i just haven't had much to contribute recently--probably a combination of the rsa tower being finished and my moving to michigan this past school year. but, like i said, i'll be back in my beloved mob-town in about a week. so i'll probably back to my usual ramblings once i can observe things firsthand again! i have missed it something awful.

Drove thourgh last night and the skyline was awesome, saw the new expanded port. I thought for a sec that it was a boat, but then I got a little closer and saw what they were. A lot of change going on.

Another lame ass Sunday paper today!

The only thing that cought my eyes was the couple of articles about minor renovations to Ladd Stadium ranging from $850,000 to I think $1.5 million for more suites.

Don't overlook the wonderful new car wash planned for the Loop. $337,500 just for the lot to put it on! I know the neighbors will be looking forward to seeing that go up.

Apple

Not to be off topic, but did anyone else notice the new Apple retail area in Best Buy? When I went there on Saturday, this space seemed busy with curious browsers throughout my visit. If it becomes successful, Apple *might* just open a store somewhere in South Alabama's regional mall in the forthcoming years.

The new lagniappe has a good article on Serda Coffee downtown. It sounds like they have hit the mark with their coffee house/smoothie shop/deli/bar combo.

I ate breakfast there yesterday for the first time, and that's definitely the sort of place Mobile needs a lot more of.
I even noticed a couple of people walking down Dauphin Street taking pictures of the shops and buildings near that intersection.

Also, I'll add that the Spanish Fort Town Center finally has a few frames going up, besides just Bass Pro. For that matter, I've been renting a condo in Daphne to someone working on the Bass Pro, and he's moving on the end of May, so if any of you know anyone looking to rent a little condo near the bay starting in June, give me a shout...

The Thyssen-Krupp construction site appears very active, but I haven't seen any activity at the "Alabama Motorsports Park" area ?

I know Mobilians have mixed views of Baldwin County, but I should mention the big 4 condo skyscrapers going up in Orange Beach that will be among the largest in the state (Turquoise Place I & II and Phoenix West I & II ).

Too bad Serda isn't open on Sundays...yet. It would be a nice spot for a snack or lunch after a bit of downtown exploration.

I think the motorsports park is still in the enviromental impact review stage. Speaking of the area, ALDOT has completed the new Industrial Pkwy from I-65 west to Schillinger Road.

I haven't been to Baldwin County or the Eastern Shore since I spend away from ESC in disgust at the number of vacant storefronts. ESC might be the first lifestyle center to appear on deadmalls.com.

Eastern Shore Center and Plaza have been developing quite nicely over the past year. check out the list of stores and restaurants. they have all the major franchises you could ask for

Unless you're asking for Gap/Banana Republic, Coach, Harold's or a nice quality electronics store. Recently, there have been some high profile tenant exits. Sharper Image, Liz Claiborne Shoes, The Shoe Dept, La Te Due, Pearl Vision and Jack's Music are just some of the stores to be shuttered. Shouldn't have vertical construction began on that megaplex by now? The development has had noticable leasing problems since its 2004 debut.

Actually, Sharper Image Company filed for bankruptcy nationwide, Pearl Vision moved to another building, and I read somewhere that Gap will be opening a store in the Spanish Fort Town Square which is why they do not already have one at ESC. And why do you not consider Best Buy a quality electronic store? They have friendly staff, they sell only name brand products, and have a great return policy.

I was kind of expecting something along the lines of Sony Style (yeah right)or Apple for a specialty electronics tenant at ESC. Besides, the Best Buy store at Springdale Plaza is much bigger and has a larger assortment of merchandise. Gap would have been a much better fit for ESC than Spanish Fort Town Center, which will be nothing more than a random collection of big box stores.

I think ESC needs more high end regional and national retailers along with niche oriented merchants. Could you imagine an Eastern Shore location of Metzger's, Pinkberry or a Segway showroom?
