My thinking for The Burt is a new lobby/backstage area would be created along Ellice where the rental car place is currently located. The advantage of this space over the over (north) side is that it could largely be accomplished without alternating the existing, historical building. Based solely on the age of the building I am sure a modern backstage area would make it more attractive to performers. The bulk of the expanded space would be a new lobby to increase alcohol sales and just make the whole process more pleasant much like the Main St addition did for Pantages.

One has to wonder a little though if True North/Longboat might have shot themselves in the foot a little as an improved lobby at The Burt would be one block east of the two CentrePoint retail spaces that seemed ideally suited to the pre/post theatre crowd with perhaps some nice restaurants/lounges. Those same spaces would have been one block away from MTS Centre too. Is it too late to change the plans again and add them back in?

That said, even the parking alone in the True North controlled CentrePoint lot would benefit from having more events at The Burt.

I am not sure if I am misunderstanding you here but, CentrePoint has leased tenants for it's two commercial spaces.....both are restaurants - Milestones and Chino Libre.

Speculation may have it that Winnipegs WTC organization may be looking at a new location in Winnipeg! And unconfirmed reports,(3rd party speculation), No money to launch or build, have come up with a solution!

There was originally a plan for two additional ground floor retail units under the parkade on Ellice. The Glass House moved off the parkade and the retail was scraped as some reports suggest it would have required a higher level of building codes (and higher costs) for the entire parkade structure.

I see, you were talking about the parkade.

^ Even at 10 it should still be a welcome addition to the area. But considering how many people currently live in that area between Main/Scott/the Red/the Assiniboine, there sure isn't much of a neighbourhood feel around there. The streetfront commercial space in this new building will help a bit in that regard.

Hotels, retail space planned for development at Assiniboia Downs
By: Staff Writer

The Manitoba Jockey Club and Peguis First Nation formally announced a new joint venture that will see two hotels, and convention and retail space developed at Assiniboia Downs.
The two equal partners have formed a company, FN Developments Inc., to carry out the development.
The partners said construction of the new development could begin by summer. It's expected to generate $100 million in infrastructure spending and jobs.
"The proposed project will offer Manitobans a unique mix of business and entertainment opportunities making it a full-service destination," said Peguis chief Glenn Hudson.
Hudson said later he hoped a casino could be part of the development. The First Nation would also like to purchase the Downs.
FN Developments plans to develop 40 acres in the area. It will announce more detailed plans this spring, Hudson said.
Community consultations and stakeholder meetings are also planned in the new year.
Several Conservative MLAs attended the morning announcement at the Downs, but government reps were conspicuous by their absence.
Peguis said the joint venture was made possible by the federal government settling a treaty land entitlement claim with the First Nation in 2009.

I wonder how much convention space they'll be looking at building.

So isn't this somewhat similar to the Westport Festival proposal just south?
Proposed building area on 70 acres of land featuring retail, hotels, restaurants, entertainment, office and flex space opportunities.

Of course the FN wants to add a Casino and a Convention Centre, as WestPort wanted to add something similar in nature but catering to Agricultural functions.

Theirs going to be some major conflict going on here.Government reps not present, NDP, but the CONS were?
This will get interesting no doubt.

There's the whole pissing match going on between the NDP and the Downs over funding and lottery. The VLT's were supposed to be removed from the Downs at some point. Not sure if that happened. IIRC, the Downs are basically squatting on crown land? Peguis claims the land is their ancestral grounds or whatever. They got a boat load of money from the government in 2009 for other land disputes. Surprising the haven't doled it all out to their members yet like some of the other FN's that got big payouts. No hate or racism here, just facts folks..

So no surprise the NDP is staying as far away as possible.

If I recall correctly, Downs accused NDP of trying to yank the VLTS to force Downs into selling to Red River Ex or something like that. Didnt the Downs win an injunction against the NDP and kept their VLTS?

Yeah it's a mess. I'm just more curious If these 2 Developments can co-exist even if the disputes are settled. How many Hotels is that? 4? 2 convention meeting spaces almost adjacent to each other? 2 Adjacent Retail centres. Why bother coming into the city at all with RBC Convention Centre expanding.?

I'm for WesportFestival but the Downs/Peguis want to start this in the Spring/Summer next year with the 100 million + they recieved for the land claim dispute. Westport is going through traffic feasabillity studies and they want to plunk this down next door in 6 months. Is it a Race?

Is there any land in Manitoba that Peguis hasn't claimed as their own? Once had sympathy for some of the First Nations claims, but when you start making claims on something new every year it get tiresome especially when you know the money they receive isn't going where it should. End of rant.

Pretty pathetic how the NDP has washed their hands of anything involving the Downs.

I dont like the First Nations casino ideas. South Beach Casino is nice, seemingly successful and well run. Although I heard that initially there was an agreement for X amount of staff to be Aboriginal but they cant get enough Aboriginals interested to meet the target.

I think a casino makes sense for the Downs area but make one that benefits all Manitobans.

A total waste of money and they seem to target those least able to afford to lose it. All of the money blown at Manitoba casinos would have been money that went into the economy not into the NDP's hands.
