The Evergreen Extension completed on time, didn't it? I think they announced it was going to be delayed, and then completed it on time anyway.

It may have been delayed by a few months, if I remember correctly, but honestly a pretty small delay considering the sink hole issues while boring.

Was delayed over a year IIRC

Going from memory, intended opening date was Summer 2016 (July?) and it actually opened in December.

Canada Line opened a little ahead of schedule.

I think they were hoping to open the Millennium Line in 2001 with the heavily fast tracked construction that started in 1998, but it was opened to Braid Station in January 2002 and Commercial Drive Station in August the same year.

Since this is under construction, the title of this post should be changed.

I think even the New Port Mann was on time, even if it didn't come with the BRT they talked about.

Honestly, 2024 isn't bad. My only worry is if something happens like with the Port Mann and, say, they drop a segment into the river, there's a lot more potential damage in the event of a fuck-up. That old rail bridge could get knocked over if you look at it wrong.

They would have to fling, not drop, a section to impact any other structure. Maybe if they forget the rebar and the tower falls over onto the rail bridge. Cross your fingers.

I was thinking more like, just the impact into the water/riverbed causing a shake. It's a pretty old bridge, I don't know how sturdy it is.

But yea it probably isn't an issue.

They'd have to drop something that was way more massive than all the trucks bouncing over the old bridge at once to even get near the same kind of stress. Not gonna happen.

Interestingly, a pile hammer was recently dropped into the River at this site, but it did not hit the old rail bridge.

I drove over the Pattullo last week and was excited to see (as these photos show) the start of piling for the Surrey side land piers. One set stood well above the current bridge deck. Even with the biggest constructions we get involved with, the scale of those for bridges, like dams etc., are quadruply impressive.

officedweller, those pics seem to be related to the railway bridge seismic upgrade project, not the new Patullo bridge, although very interesting.

Why would there be a piling on either side of the railway bridge?

I think the pilings are related to this project:

https://iaac-aeic.gc.ca/050/evaluations/proj/81023
CN rail bridge seismic retrofit project
Canadian National Railway Company (CN) proposes to complete seismic retrofit upgrades to the CN rail bridge located at Mile 118.7 on the Fraser River directly upstream of the Pattullo Bridge. Upgrades will require the installation of ten new 2750 millimetre diameter steel piles. Two piles each will be installed at pier 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10. New piles will be connected to the in-water piers using steel girder collars, pile sleeves and caps. Piles will be driven in welded segments by impact hammer from a temporary construction trestle or barge. The purpose of the project is to strengthen the substructure and foundations for increased seismic capacity.

To help inform a determination on whether the proposed project is likely to cause significant adverse environmental effects, and to assist the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority in making a decision on whether or not to approve the proposed project, the Vancouver Fraser Port Authority and Transport Canada are inviting comments from the public.

Thanks. The railway project makes sense.

The bridge foundations will be east of the railway bridge and are supposed to be under constuction now.
