Yeah it would be one hot building otherwise...

Also, saw a sign for this construction firm on the building at the corner of Poeyfarre and Annunciation Streets...

Not sure what the plan is but they appear to know how to build a P.F. Changs lol from their portfolio!

With the (well-justified) complaints about the Endymion crowds roping off the entire neutral ground this year, I'm reminded of an old idea of mine. Sorry it's not strictly "skyscraper" or construction, but it IS related to economic development.

I wonder how unrealistic it is that Margi Gras parades in the future could fan out across the entire city. St. Claude Avenue could have a few parades, like it did way back in the day. Freret could have a parade back (like it did until the 1990s). Mid City could have a few. Maybe Rampart St. Esplanade, Elysian Fields, Lakeview, New Orleans East.....

Seems like a no-brainer for rebuilding neighborhood pride and cohesion. I know the city consolidated all the parades Uptown in order to decrease police costs, but Uptown really does have more parades than it knows what to do with. Uptown could sacrifice a few days of parades in order to let other neighborhoods have a piece of the action. It's the equitable thing to do; Uptown doesn't need the economic development nearly as much as most of these other areas.

I kind of agree. Parades do give a bit of neighborhood cohesion but there is also some fun in being able to justify building stands etc because there are two weeks of parades. So I have mixed feelings about this. Many of these smaller parades wouldnt have the crowds if they paraded on their own.

The idea that you are going to change some of these Krewes routes is laughable. Most people who ride in Krewes wouldnt drive down St. Claude much less want to to pay for a parade there. I would love to see you suggest this to someone from Proteus, Thoth, or Rex.

If you want to increase neighborhood cohesion have those neighborhoods form their own organizations and put on a parade. A parade permit is a whole $200...

Wow your rude man...

All he was suggesting was to revisit the idea, plus many of these Krewe originated in these areas of town and were sort of forced by the city to locate parades elsewhere. New Orleans decided to follow the metairie model. With the exception being Endymion! BTW, some could argue that part of Endymions success is its unique route!

Ok so Western Son took what I said completely out of context. I'm not asking Rex (or any parade) to change its route. But the city could open the door for neighborhood organizations located away from St. Charles Avenue to put on parades in their own neighborhoods. It actually used to be this way. Even in the 1980s, there were still maybe 7 parades in Mid City. Further back, I know for a fact Okeanos used to parade down St. Claude Ave.

There were multiple reasons this pattern disappeared. One, demographics change. White people moved to the burbs. Two, economic stagnation. Groups in lower-income areas couldn't afford parades anymore. And three, the city favored consolidation of the parade routes.

I think we can all agree that the little neighborhood music festivals all over town are good for the city. I think we can all agree that Mardi Gras parades are about as New Orleans as it gets, for all New Orleanians, not just the lucky few (or unlucky few, as some people feel about it) who live near St. Charles.

Why not have the city put feelers out to neighborhood groups and see if there are groups that would like to have parades in the areas I mentioned above? In order to encourage bigger crowds and ease the stress on the police, the outer-area parades could be limited to the weekend before the big weekend. Maybe we don't even need parades on St. Charles Ave. on the weekend prior to the big weekend. Don't you think it'd be smart to spread the Mardi Gras mojo more around town on that weekend?

Or are you too worried about what the Knights of King Arthur and the Krewe of Oshun are going to say?

CamKazaam, I think that's a great idea. I do think the city pushing for consolidation is kind of a bummer, although with the new streetcar lines coming maybe this could be a way to push for the city to be more accepting of parades in other parts of town. Not all parades have to be the mega Krewe's that they have turned into. I personally like some of the smaller parades including Barkus and Krewe de Vieux.

In response to MidCity...those metal shades lower energy costs, which is essential for this building's LEED certification. I know right now the building is almost sure to get LEED Silver, but with extra money available due to low construction costs and investing that extra cash this building may even get Gold certification. It would be pretty cool if that were to happen. I guess we'll know by May when it should be opening.

Perfect example of many of the things wrong with New Orleans. The fact that people feel this way is even more laughable, while sad at the same time.

Exactly Uptowner, I get so tired of people bashing ideas without even thinking them through. Its more the tone than the point of view that irks me. People in New Orleans love a good festival/ parade, what better way to show off your hood than to throw a great festival. Po-Boy Festival anyone? or Freret Street market?

Yes that means the temp is rising and its fair weather. Red means clouds and flashing red means approaching storms. Really great to see it lit up when driving into the city.

Hello New Orleanians!

I will have the chance to visit your city from the 17th of April until the 21st on a business trip, and will be staying at the Mariott on CANAL street....

This may not be the right place, but could you answer a couple questions for me?

1. I wasn't planning to rent a vehicle, I should be ok walking around that area as far as having restaurant/lounge options right?
2. Is there anything you recommend a New Orleans newbie to check out while I'm down? (specifically in the evenings)

Thanks a bunch!

Just take a taxi from the airport to downtown and you will have everything you need in walking distance once you get to the French Quarter / Downtown: Entertainment, awesome food, places to roam around and explore, etc.

Things to do:
1.Get some Beignets and coffee from Cafe Du Monde, see the St Louis Cathedral, Jackson Square, and walk along the river.
2. Bourbon St
3. Walk up and down Royal and Chartres if you care for small shops and art galleries.
4. Souvenirs / shops on Decatur.
5. Harrahs Casino right across from your Marriot
6. Hop on a street car and ride to uptown to see the garden district. You can walk along St. Charles Ave to see the beautiful houses and oak trees, and walk over to Magazine St for small shops, restaurants, and bars - I don't know what kind of schedule you will be on for work, but if you have a few hours to spare in the daytime St Charles and Magazine would be a nice place to spend it.

Not sure what type of scene your into but its wise to grab a Gambit or Where Y'at magazine(they are usually very easy to find) and check out all the happenings for each night. There is plenty to do, but these sources are usually a great way to see everything from festivals to courtyard jazz concerts that is going on every night. Wendesdays at the Square(Lafayette Square downtown) will be going on by the time your in town and thats always a fun local thing to do.

Also, you need to venture outside the French Quarter to try many of the IMO better restaurants in town. French Quarter can be very hit or miss.

Julia Street in the Warehouse District also has great art galleries, and these tend toward more progressive art than the places on Royal (which are more like "souvenir art").

Great News!!

Looks like our prayers have been heard, New Orleans may save a beautiful building, and the Tulane Avenue Renaissance will continue.

The moving of the building is being considered according to the news article. It appears that the school board will retain control over it, so it will probably continue to remain a school, but I've said from the very beginning that this building would make a great new Civil Courthouse. And they are considering moving it one block over from the current Criminal Courthouse. Perhaps it's a sign and someone got the message.
