I dunno, man. Grande Cache is about 150 km NW of Hinton. A Kananaskis North could work near Hwy 40 along the Athabasca River valley.

Grande Cache is a town closer to the mountains than Hinton, and outside of the parks. That's good enough for me. Plenty of untapped potential.

It ain't going to work if you cannot leave work slightly early Friday and not get there for dinner-ish or ~3-4hrs travel time.

Have to Agree, A new Park would be great just north of Hinton, sorta between GC and Hinton. But the area around Grande Cache is quite possibly one of the nicer areas if been to.

So the OBED coal mines.

Realistically any to the North or South of Hinton along the east slopes of the Park.

City of Edmonton @CityofEdmonton
It’s history in the making! The community of Oliver is now named Wîhkwêntôwin ᐄᐧᐦᑫᐧᐣᑑᐃᐧᐣ (We-Kwen-To-Win) a nêhiyawêwin (Cree) word meaning Circle of Friends.

Find out more about the name and the renaming process at http://uncoveroliver.ca

Cadomin is also a better option than Hinton.

There's a provincial park north of Hinton, William A Switzer up Highway 40.
You do 120km/h from almost anywhere in Edmonton, its right around the 3 hour mark.

When people say park, what are you thinking of? More hotels? More camping? Hinton proper doesn't have much room to develop with the current land use/ownership.

Anywhere else is really just as far as Jasper and does not have any real services to speak of

Valemount and Jasper need to team up. Valemount is has such great potential, especially if they ever get that ski resort going.
I've fallen in love with what they've done for mountain biking there, at the Bike Park.

(yes, its another hour west of Jasper... but its about equal distance for me to get to Golden from Edmonton...)

I have been to Switzer and did not forget it. The talk was a Kananaski north. As you point out, More hotels,More development etc.

Switzer is great for getting away from people. But what drive the influx into Kananaski is its close proximity to Calgary. People can do day trips.

3 -4 hour drive for me is nothing. Hell I do Jasper for day trips. But the average schmo doesn't think that way.

If the highway to GC was better I could easily see having that area develop more.

I look at Banff now and glad I can no longer can afford to go there.

Yup Valemount is another potential. We have seen How west coasters are now heading east for the better snow.

Valemont is not happening, the residents don't want it and it is TOO far.

And Yet when I was in Valemont this year a few people I talked with said they had hoped it would go forward.

I did notice the cost of Hotel rooms went way up last year. And getting a place was tougher. Looks like the summer season has picked up. They are usually packed with Snowmobiler's in the winter.

I would love for Valemount to happen if there is a growing demand for it. I can see it as a potential new Golden or Radium/Invermere.

It's too far away for anything substantial and chatting with some ski industry folks from Canmore a couple of weeks ago, they seemed to believe it was a non-starter.
