Hampton Inn

Has construction begun on the new Hampton Inn in midtown? I've lost track.

Drove past the site today. Saw zero activity. Just a construction fence.

I am sure someone has a pic, but believe me this is a different city. Midtown was desolate. I will try to search one.

Not a aerial, but here is one from 1966 Peachtree at 10th, kind of cool grit though.

1981 Peachtree with Colony Square, very desolate compared to today, amazing difference.

Here is an aerial, look at the massive difference. Probably about 1990, taken from IBM Tower as it was known then.

Fuqua is proposing a mixed use along Piedmont Park.

Any Business Chronicle subscribers who can share details?

Same here when I moved to Atlanta in 1989. The Michael Graves building, the old First Union building at 10th and Peachtree, and the AT&T building, the Crown Plaza and One Georgia Center are the only high rises I can see that were there then. Amazing.

This is the Fuqua site:

I bet all the asshat NIMBYs are seriously regretting rejecting the prior idea there Terraces on the Park: https://www.aiaga.org/design_awards/the-terraces-at-the-park/

Now they will get something really crappy there.

I wouldn't have really called it desolate...in 1990 most of the streets were lined with low-rise buildings and gay bars were abundant along Peachtree along with older hotels/motels and restaurants. It was almost all gay at that time because no one else wanted Midtown, and the skyline definitely was not present with the exception of about a dozen taller buildings.

1990 looking north from downtown...in this one you can see the first Mayfair Tower that was completed in 1990 along with the AT&T cluster (~8 towers), Promenade II, OAC, Ten Peachtree Place, Colony Square (~3 towers), 999 Peachtree, and 1280 West - 17 high rises or so TOTAL spread across 20+ blocks. This why people used to call Atlanta's skyline "spread-out":

Oh I know, just compared to present it was desolate. I am gay and remember all of the bars, Gallus, Metro, etc, you could not even find where they use to be now. Their were many areas around there that were either parking lots or open fields

I really wish the smith dalia project went through. There's too much room for error at this location

Godammit. We're all about to get Fuq'd.

It annoyed me when this happened at other locations, but this is our crown jewel in Atlanta. I'm dreading seeing the design of this.

It is rumoured from early iterations that it will be hotel, apartments, and townhomes with some retail lining the betlline and a natural grocer...

That little area is going to be a traffic clusterfuck, glad I never drive around there

Good. I really hope this turns out ok. I'm just not optimistic with his track record. This site isn't huge though, so hopefully he's forced into some decent urban design.

I see the traffic around here often and it's not terrible unless you're commuting further away, particularly north/south neighborhoods not immediately around Piedmont Park. I absolutely welcome the density. I'd love for this plot and the entire western side of the EST down toward PCM be re-developed. People want to live and shop in this area, take transit, walk to work, have fewer trips by vehicle, or simply have a shorter commute to their work. Not to mention adding more places to live will support ridership on the eventual EST LRT.

If Apple and a bunch of Retail comes to Peachtree in Midtown they have to get it right the first time. Im thinking all or Mostly flagship midlevel stores. Anything thats little and tucked in the basement of an apartment building will get ignored. And nothing too upscale. J.Crew, 21 forever, GAP, Banana Republic, and H&M, (yes, By that time I think we can handle another one that close), ZARA and stuff like that. Not Chanel and Prada. Maybe a Macy's or Von Mour or Nordstrom would help too. But leave the majority of the upscale stuff to Buckhead.

Lincoln RD. in Miaimi Beach would be a great model. Not too upscale. All midlevel stores. But with great aesthetics .
