A photo I took last week of Victoria from the Songhees walkway. What a difference a week makes. Very cold and snowing right now.

Wow, doesn’t that make you wish Vancouver would get snow more often ?

Fantastic Vancouver snow!

I took this one a month ago sadly, but this view has got one of the most interesting views of the skyline.

Here are a couple pics I took yesterday in Takamatsu (the nearest bigger city to me). It was a nice day, high around 10 and a mix of sun and cloud.

It's so depressing comparing the urbanity of Canadian cities to Asian cities. Takamatsu has a metro population of what? 500,000?

Great photos though. Thanks for posting.

Lots of density, but I find Japanese cities don't look super nice and inviting at street level. A lot of the storefronts are plain or ugly looking, and you got wires running everywhere.

Yeah, not exactly the urban type I'd like to have over here.

We should have more (central) Montreal urban types across Canada.

Yep, no offense to Metro-One's pics, which are great, but in general Japan's built urban form has never struck me as that great. Lots of low, forgettable midrises and not much greenery outside of the parks.

I like Japan for a number of things, but their architecture is not one of them. It looks utilitarian more than anything else.

Humourist Dave Barry nailed it about Tokyo (and essentially, Japan) with his observation of the built environment:

Quote:
I'll get the bad news out of the way right up front: Tokyo is ugly. It looks like it was hit by an anti-charm missile. It had the bad fortune of being almost entirely rebuilt after World War II, during what architectural historians refer to as the "Age of Making Everything Look Like a Municipal Parking Garage, But Without the Warmth."

Man, Dave Barry, blast from the past. He's not wrong, but somehow Japanese urbanism adds up to way more than the sum of its parts.

I seem to recall something about the Americans in the 50s moving Japanese restructuring funding away from Tokyo proper and towards infrastructure projects, but I could be wrong.

Weird to jokingly refer to Tokyo as being hit by an anti-charm missile when in reality thousands were killed and the entire city was decimated by the US's firebombing campaigns in the 40s.

Tokyo might not have the prettiest buildings but i'd wager that its urban form beats just about most any other place in the world.

The thing about Tokyo is that, despite almost every building being utilitarian and ugly, it is full of charming neighbourhoods because the scale is very intimate. Many parts of the city are warrens of little one-lane streets lined by interesting businesses, with quirky details that change from one area to the next. It's like Kensington Market without as many cars and spread out over dozens of square kilometres.

Other Japanese cities can be a little bland because they lack the density and heterogeneity of Tokyo.
