A colleague of mine sent me this, figured I would pass it along as it seems helpful.

This "doctor" is a quack chiropractor who has shit credentials and sells his own "remedies" for various ailments online.

The last Threadgill's (on N. Lamar) is closing forever. The owners are retiring.

I've noticed a few local places that people have raved about that weren't very good. For me, Kerbey Lane is very so-so. The Bakehouse was pretty pathetic. They went out of business. Hills Cafe is/was also way overrated. It was the greasiest food I've had in a long time. I was kind of shocked considering how many people still talk about it.

All the places you mentioned are/were reliable gathering spots where you could meet up with friends without much fuss or muss and sometimes get something halfway decent to eat at a reasonable price. I personally loved Magnolia West for those reasons. Even Threadgill's could every now and then pull off a decent "home cooking" kind of meal, albeit not very often. Still it was a comfortable place to hang with friends and grab something to eat. Long time residents build up memories associated with these places, so there is understandable sadness at seeing some of them bite the dust.

Also just want to add that some of these longtime establishments might just be over it and cashing in on the property. I don’t think threadgills was 100% covid related but more an opportunity. Just my opinion, please don’t yell at me also sorry this also a response to what I’m seeing on reddit and Facebook not so much you guys in this thread. I’ve seen a million people post on Facebook covid took out threadgills.

The Bakehouse closed because the owner retired after both his sons declined to take over the restaurant.

All the long-time local places started in an era when food in Austin was at a different level. A much lower level. So even the local favorites weren’t that good cuisine-wise. The new level is really hard to compete with for these kinds of places.

I will say that long ago, at it’s original location, Kerby lane was pretty decent. I noticed once it became a chain the quality went down.

For me it's sad to see Magnolia Cafe (Lake Austin Blvd Location) & Vulcan Video Close. Old Austin is disappearing quick.

I was sad when The Stallion, El Matt’s, The Pig Stand, and The Holiday House closed.
Those were part of my “Old Austin”.

There was a time when Monterrey House was the go to Mexican food restaurant for a lot of Austinites. The food was just OK for back then, but I would compare it to the frozen Mexican entrees you can get at HEB nowadays.

Introduction

Hi folks - I've been lurking for months now and finally decided to join in on the conversations. I figured this was the appropriate forum for introductions. I am in the construction industry and my company is involved with several high-rises in Austin. Kinda funny - I sometimes find news on this forum regarding projects I am involved with even before they are announced Folks here do a great job digging into public records. Anyway, I will try to offer some insight if and when I can.

The original 911 series was good in a weird sort of way, but 911 lone star is way too corny.
