Wait, the names are lit at night? That's pretty cool.

Someday, we'll look back at pictures from around this time and marvel at how young the trees looked. It's a gorgeous memorial, hopefully it'll age just as well.

I had read somewhere they would be backlit, and those pics confirmed that.

I believe the panels will also be heated in the winter so they'll be more comfortable to the touch.

From what I read/heard...it will also be cool to the touch during the hot summer months.

Yep, they are running coolant within hoses underneath the panels. They can get really hot sitting in the sun. That was discovered late in the design process. The retrofit was featured in one of the the Discovery Channel episodes.

Here's a roughly 39 minute interview on Charlie Rose with Silverstein, Daniel Liebeskind, David Childs who designed 1 WTC, Chris Ward Executive Director of the PA, and Paul Goldberger who's an architecture critic for the New Yorker. Nothing new is really said, but it was interesting to hear what they all had to say about the progress.

Here's the link.

I just can't get over how INCREDIBLE the fountains look in that golden light. It's like nothing I ever imagined. Unreal.

It may be temporary, but the touch of fall in the air today makes me think of a time when the leaves will change, even when the memorial is covered in snow. It will always be beautiful.

chantastic!

Some reporter said in one of the news reports last week that those trees would like get to be around 70 feet tall! Like almost 3 times their current size!
Is that true?

That would certainly change the area into almost a mini-forest.

These trees are Swamp White Oak trees. They grow to a height of anywhere between 60-80 feet.

In fact the only tree that isn't a Swamp Oak is a Wild Pear tree that was at the World Trade Center before 9/11, but survived the attack, and the collapse of both towers themselves. The tree is extremely symbolic, and that is the only one that isn't a Swamp Oak. It's basically a survivor tree.
