- the Co-op building itself will be no loss.

- I agree that the last thing the city needs is another surface parking lot. The main issue that I have with the downtown parking situation is the plethora of surface parking that is not available to the casual user because it is leased monthly parking patrolled by those useless vulture booters. These need to be replaced by indoor parking structures.

- You're right that the juxtaposition of this property WRT to the events centre is interesting, especially given the plans to build a tunnel from the events centre to the south side of the tracks. A parking structure here would be very strategic. There wouldn't be much point though to Sobeys actually building one until 2018, when the events centre is slated to open.

It wouldn't be financially viable for Sobeys to build a parking structure solely for the Events Centre either. I do know that both Heritage and the Co-Operators are having parking issues (especially the Co-Operators as they keep adding employees). The potential structure could be rented to these buildings from 9-5 and eventually, for the Events Centre, on evening and weekends.

That's great - the city is doing a great job with pushing surface parking out of the downtown. I know it's not necessarily their call - but over the last 5 years nothing seems to have gotten built downtown but yet a number of parking lots have been added. A tad frustrating to watch.

It seems it's easier to get a permit to Demolish then a building permit. At least that's what I've heard from owners of land that have been turned into parking lots.

Terrible news. This business was one of the bright spots on St-George.

I would eat there on many Saturdays when I would often have business to do in that area. Sad to see it gone and I hope he reopens downtown somewhere nearby.

I hope he does rebuild and I wish him well. A downtown location on St George would be ideal.

re: Dolma Foods

Quote:
Hossein Barar watched alongside many neighbourhood residents as his store was destroyed by fire on Monday morning. In the aftermath of the fire, Barar said he's been touched by all of the community support that he's received.

"I felt it's a neighbourhood store, they own it, they want it to be opened," he said.

"As manager, I should do my job. I continue to find a solution and see how we can go forward."
(cbc)

It sounds as if he had his druthers, he would rebuild on the same spot on St George. The only sticking point will be what his insurers have to say. I hope he is successful. He seems to have near universal community support to get this done.......

More bad news for the downtown.

St James Gate restaurant is closed indefinitely after a major flood this morning.

The restaurant should reopen, but I imagine it will be months before this happens.

Or better yet, a nice lighted tunnel under the tracks with nice lighted billboard advertising signs which could help with pay for the tunnel.

Dolma will likely reopen in a temporary location by the end of January, and the owner is planning on eventually rebuilding at the location of the demolished building.

http://ici.radio-canada.ca/breve/41096/epicerie-dolma-moncton-va-renaitre-de-ses-cendres

The building itself was nothing special, so anything will be an improvement. Facetiously, if only a few more buildings around downtown could burn down...

Three blocks west, La Louche is also closing: https://www.telegraphjournal.com/times-transcript/story/45355279/downtown-moncton-cafe-closing

I agree.

If Dolma rebuilds in the same spot, and puts up a building with a significant street presence (say three stories with upstairs apartments), then St George St will be a net beneficiary of this fire.

I have high hopes that he will rebuild. I like Barar's attitude where his neighbourhood clientele "owns" the business and he merely manages it for them. No wonder his customer base is so loyal. Hopefully his insurance company will cooperate........

The Junction - Urban Village - Moncton - NB

What happened to this project? Is it dead?
We haven't seen any movement on this development in months.

There is a looooong tradition of ambitious projects proposed for downtown Moncton which experience significant delays and/or never see the light of day. This is one of them.

I'm sure the developer has the best of intentions, but capitalization may be a problem, and this project will not proceed until such a time when there is sufficient interest by potential partners to allow for this to happen.

On the plus side, this is a large parcel of land on an important intersection within spitting distance of the new events centre development. Something will get built here (eventually), but whether or not it ends up looking like the initial renderings is certainly up in the air.

I suspect it won't be until at least 2017 (at the earliest) until we see some action here. Once you start seeing tower cranes over the events centre site, this might spur interest in the neighbouring Junction development too.

The events centre will be a catalyst for growth in the west end of the downtown core, but construction of the events centre won't be complete until 2018. In might not be for another decade after this before we see the full range of adjacent developments take place.

When it comes to downtown redevelopment, you really have to take the long view..........

Here's a useful link from Downtown Moncton Inc, listing all the downtown parking lots, what their hours are, which ones are public and whether or not there is free evening and/or weekend parking.

The link also lets you know which lots employ those evil jackal booters......

A new African restaurant just opened at 33 Church street downtown. Looks like a great addition to the increasingly varied restaurant offerings downtown.

Edit: Actually, this CBC article says the restaurant is on Killam.
