It makes sense for the third lane to feed the Vancouver exit/entrance. This means McGill gets dedicated on/off lanes in both directions - which is probably an accurate portrayal of McGill's share of traffic in both directions. This will still help through traffic considerably.

Dramatic improvement in the operation of the Hwy 99 NB HOV lane approaching the Massey Tunnel since the lane was separated and the Exit 28 ramp moved further south. It completely eliminates the cutting in from Lane #1 of the NB through traffic into the HOV/Exit 28 lane which was happening all the way until the exit ramp. Traffic moves smoothly, without congestion. Last week, the left turn from the exit to Hwy 17 always clogged the HOV lane movement -- now with the new Exit 28, and the future completion of the Hwy 99 to SFPR southbound ramp, the HOV lane will truly become one again.

Also, little-noticed, but still an improvement nonetheless: the conversion of the L turn from Steveston Hwy WB to No. 5 Road to a double-loaded turn. Moves twice the vehicles in the same advance left turn green, and thus speeds up EB movement (in theory).

The improvement from this single change has been huge. There is no longer any congestion westbound at this intersection, at any time of day. All westbound congestion is now caused by the awful MoT traffic lights on the freeway offramps.

The new intersection uses a pattern I haven't seen before: the westbound left turn occurs at the beginning of the green, and the eastbound left turn occurs at the end of the green. This seems to be working better than any other left-turn system I've seen.

The intersection is also gaining a dedicated right-turn lane westbound, whenever Shaw gets around to re-wiring its lines on the utility poles. (Is it just me, or is Shaw responsible for months of delays on every road expansion project lately?)

Eastbound traffic has also improved a little, due to the reduced length of red lights.

What a disaster today on the roads this PM.

MaryHill Bypass - 9 car accident, another separate accident took out some signal poles.

Highway 1, oh there's the daily accident out in Langley - semi in the median, and MOTi chooses to pull it out at 5:30 PM and block the Highway. 2 hour queue to get through there. Accident happened by 256 Street in Langley. Traffic was back to McCallum in Abbotsford. For reference, that's a 19 km backup.. 19 km. This is in the "non-rush hour" direction.

Highway 1 through Langley/Abbotsford carries about the same amount of traffic as the portion through Surrey.

Gateway has done a lot, the Massey Tunnel needs to be dealt with, but something, in terms of road improvements or rapid/rail transit out to the Valley needs to be done in the very short term future.

burrard and cornwall is being changed into a simpler "T" intersection - would a traffic cirlce have worked in that spot?

IMO a circle for that large a road and level of traffic would make it difficult for pedestrians to cross, unless they have underpasses.

Mother of god.
If News1130 today is right, there are some people in this metro who commute 300km daily from Hope to Vancouver and back. How do they rationalize this.... I don't even.

Nagging wife at home, so your 8hr job now becomes at least 13hrs aways from the wife and kids and on those days that life at home is even more unbearable you can blame traffic and make it home just in time to hit the sack and avoid family life altogether.

I knew a girl that lived just past Cultus lake and commuted d/t everyday to a crappy job. Don't know how it paid for parking and gas in a old pick up truck. She did it for years.

I'm quite disappointed by the news. A new bridge is the worst solution. No new path efficiency, tons more cars.

Worst of all, I don't get to build a new tunnel

Any map of that? Sounds like that should be part of the One project by Concord, but Smithe is currently one-way coming off the Cambie St. bridge. I can't figure out what they are trying to create there.

Plans are just for a dead-end road with roundabout from Pacific westwards (does not reach Expo Blvd).

Its almost like Vancouver is actually starting to build roads (well bridges anyways) appropriate to a city this size.

Speaking of Smith I had to laugh (or cry) at the amount of personnel, time and money the City of Vancouver is spending on a one block bike lane on Smithe between Expo and Beatty. The amount of city trucks that have been hanging about there the last few weeks is a total joke.
