This pretty much sums up the community I live in (Bedford, Halifax, NS);

There are three cranes on this street right now with another two condo buildings underway along with a lot of commercial activity.

As of right now there are 16 Construction Cranes at 14 sites in the skies of Halifax. Another site was found tonight that might have one up soon and theres at least one more coming for downtown (probably this month).

The Lister Block (Canada's first indoor mall) is slowly being revealed....

It's been nearly 20 years since the Lister Block had any power. Soon the building will be open for the general public to tour.

The renovation really looks nice.
Would love to take a tour of the place when it's completed.

One Valhalla Site: - Demolition underway

For your edification, the following is basically a rearrangement and de-hyping of the press release that accompanied the renders. Some good info can be found within!

Thunderbird's glass exterior is strongly reminiscent of Edlican's The Met on Carlton east of Yonge, also by Page + Steele / IBI Architects. Landscaping is by Schollen & Company Inc. The towers will rise from a one-acre landscaped podium and will radiate from a landscaped courtyard at ground-level with stone walls, raised planters, decorative lighting and a playground. “Thunderbird” was chosen for the second tower because of its association with classic and iconic design that also recaptures that time. Sporty and luxurious, the car manufactured by the Ford Motor Company beginning in 1955 was billed as a personal luxury car, which appealed to a new market niche, like the Inn, which was one of Toronto’s first motor inns. A few of the original Inn’s more interesting heritage artifacts will be incorporated into the new condominium residences. Edilcan is working with Heritage Preservation Services to showcase these elements in the best possible way. For example, some of the stonework from the original George Robb-designed buildings is being reclaimed and reused. Demolition on the original Inn will begin this fall so that excavation for One Valhalla can start.

The buildings’ extensive amenities are appointed by Munge Leung, the majority of which will be located in Thunderbird. Munge Leung appointed all the building’s social and recreational spaces with respect for the original Valhalla Inn on the site and its era, while keeping the design contemporary. The Inn was characterized by the Scandinavian design that was popular when it was built in 1963. The indoor pool, splash pool and hot tub will be adjacent to the patio on the rooftop podium, which means residents will be able to swim and look out or walk out onto this meticulously landscaped area for a rejuvenating experience. The Resident’s Club bar and lounge also has a walkout to the ambiance of a landscaped podium. Amenities extend to a theatre, fitness facilities, business/study centres complete with Wi-Fi, media/library lounge, children’s activity room, guest suites, and landscaped terrace rooftop with barbecue areas and an outdoor children’s play area.

Thunderbird’s one-bedroom, one-bedroom + den, two-bedroom and two-bedroom + study designs will be priced from the low $200,000s (including parking). One Valhalla will also ultimately include 68 contemporary private two and three-storey townhomes. Some suites in Phase 1 are still available. You may tour the two Munge Leung-appointed model suites. The finishes are of a high quality so that practically everything in the models is standard. Designed to appeal to different sensibilities, the two-bedroom + den model leans toward the classic and traditional, and the one-bedroom design is more modern, with retro touches in table bases and lighting. Both models have been well received!

A Highway 427 skyline is forming well with the Valhalla and Tridel projects, adding onto existing apartment blocks along that stretch.

I wish they didn't brick in some of the windows on the old house.. but overall it turned out to be better than I expected.
