While it does get discouraging to see the delays that some councilors seem to enjoy heaping on developers, I am glad to know the mayor is very much for getting things done.
Oh, I completely agree. My humour at the time was directed at his comment about the upcoming election however, there is little doubt that as Mayor, he has done more for the City than McAlary and Wayne did in 20 years combined and I made sure to applaud him for that in my communication.

Was just reading in the paper that the buildings @ 63 and 65 Carleton Street are being torn down this month. It says in the paper " The buildings were bought by the Saint John Parking Commission, which will use the site and the area down the hill to Sewell Street to augment the police justice complex."

Looks like things are on a move for the area north of union.

What does 'augment the police justice complex' mean? Are they planning on leaving it empty to give the impression of importance or something?

that seriously made me laugh out loud, well done!

Let's hope they mean "augment" as in heighten or lengthen, not just to make it larger in comparison...

(but since I live in Quispam, I guess I don't have a vote ...)
It may have been part luck, part skill...either way, I do think that May's elections will be far-reaching in terms of their effects and repercussions...I think that there are a number of great potential candidates who have been involved in various aspects of city / waterfront development could really accelerate / focus future direction...with a bit of luck, 4-5 high quality candidates will end up on the ballot....leads to my next question ---> is there a current confirmed list of those planning on running for mayor?

Anyone know where on Millidge Avenue this is proposed? Its from the Saint John Journal section of the Telegraph Journal on Friday I think.

Quote:
Council supports proposed project

The mayor and common council have agreed to send a letter of support to Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation on behalf of a proposed 20-unit housing project off Millidge Avenue. Newport Village is a subsidized not-for-profit housing project that was built in 1991. The directors of Newport Village want to construct another similar housing project under the province's affordable housing program. Coun. Peter McGuire convinced the other politicians that the North End project was worthwhile.

Dunno, but the only vacant spots left for development would be from the intersection at Somerset to Boar's Head. Of course up near The Anchorage too...

My understanding of the location - to put it in perspective - is that if you were to walk out the front door of Stone Church, these buildings are immediately to your left. They are in a major state of disrepair and indeed, they are an eye sore and will not be missed. Thing is, I cannot ascertain in my mind how this land will benefit the Parking Commission ..

I had an opportunity to volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and salvage valuable building materials and fixtures from the property at 63-65 Carleton. I was pleased that the parking commission gave us the chance to get the stuff out. It is a great help to Habitat and also diverts materials from land fills. We got some historic looking things (fireplace inserts, mantels and banisters) that could be useful to heritage property owners. I imagine the items salvaged will be priced and ready for sale sometime this week at the Habitat for Humanity ReStore.

That wasn't me. I'm glad I didn't make the paper -- the photos that they took of me involved heavy lifting and a contorted face as I strained.

There was a pretty good crew of volunteers there this weekend. I was impressed they got so many people out with it being so cold.

That sounds great! Congrats on being involved in such a positive project, we need to make a bigger deal out of that sort of thing here in Saint John, it will help our image and self-esteem

Also, I don't want to let the cat out of the bag, but I have heard some good news about some active-transport trail/habitat restoration projects to link Harbour Passage with parts of East Saint John, but that's all I'm going to say for now...

Oh, and thanks to everyone posting photos here and in the North of Union thread. For those of us who are out of town, it is great to be able to see what is going on back home. It's times like these when I love the internet

You know, having lived in a number of small/medium cities, the thing that strikes me about SJ is that it has managed, despite high rates of poverty, to retain a sense & spirit of community & giving that is rare to find these days...
