The new 8,800 seat downtown events centre in Moncton officially opened today, and has now has an official name - the
Avenir Centre
Avenir is a chain of audiology clinics in New Brunswick, headquartered in Moncton. The announcement of Avenir as the winner of the naming rights certainly came out of left field. Nobody was expecting it. There were many more likely candidates all with significant corporate presence in Moncton including RBC, TD Bank, National Bank, Tangerine Bank, Assumption Life, Medavie Blue Cross, Rogers Communication, Atlantic Lotto, Molsons and various Irving enterprises such as Majesta/Royale, Midland Transport and Cavendish Farms.
I like the name Avenir though. It means "future" in French, and works well with the Resurgo monument in the plaza out front. Resurgo is Moncton's motto and means "I rise again". All very positive and forward thinking........
