View looking west along Highway 17 heading west towards Sault Ste. Marie. Starting in 2026, this section of highway will be reduced to a single lane in each direction for full depth reconstruction of the divided highway.

Freeway Franks made great highway videos. I hope he is still producing these. Haven't seen him around in a while.

Small rant but what's with all the drivers crossing the HOV buffer whenever they please? Seems like this is not being enforced because drivers are zig-zagging in and out all the time.

As someone who is trying to obey the law, this is frustrating AF and seems dangerous for those who may not be prepared to be cut off. What can be done to enforce this- more police, bollards in the buffer, just get rid of the buffer, etc?

It really got to me on my last trip to Toronto. Also annoying are the acceleration lane queue jumpers but at least those are dashed lines and not signed DO NOT CROSS.

Also makes pieces of infrastructure like that dedicated in/out spot for HOVs on the 400 seem like a total waste.

One may argue that HOV lanes outside of rush hour on 400-series expressways are a waste in general (except maybe on QEW).
As for people crossing solid lines, yes it’s frustrating, but it’s Ontario, so you have to be prepared for just about anything.

On the spectrum of driving infractions, it's probably not worth enforcing. The queue jumpers frustrate me the most... used to be mostly a "Toronto" thing but it feels like it's become much more widespread, and I see it through Hamilton now on a regular basis. It's very unsafe, though there are many who still try to move into a GPL very early in the merge-lane without taking more of the open highway lane to which they're entitled and that is unsafe too (especially if they haven't accelerated).

See here at least it's a dashed white lane so you are technically allowed to go into the acceleration lane. It's a dick move absolutely, but you could argue that fact. Some entrances/exits are getting a solid white lane with dashes on one side only, indicating that you can only change lanes one way.... but I think most drivers are too dumb to understand that setup.

Something like this:

https://www.google.com/maps/@43.3315799,..._ep=EgoyMDI1MTEzMC4wIKXMDSoASAFQAw%3D%3D

---

But for HOVs, you have not one but two solid white lines with a dash between them and constant DO NOT CROSS signs above. Crossing that is a blatant disregard of the rules of the road and easily charged by OPP if they ever wanted to enforce it.

O.P.P. in GTA is too busy for that. Sergeant Kerry Schmidt did pull people over for misusing the HOV on 401 through Mississauga at one point, but that was once in a bluemoon.
O.P.P. in Kanata, on the other hand, is a lot more active on the stretch of 417 with HOV lanes. I even saw one pulling a driver over for that, in action.
