My understanding is that there were a few minor changes (i.e. options for more retail and something about options for plaza(?), but otherwise support from planning department.
According to the City's website it will be decided by Council on Feb. 25.

New life for the Bowerman Block (former American Apparel) on 21st Street:

http://reddeeproperties.com/properti...-saskatoon-sk/

....Based on the "Prairie Pint" placeholder signage, and the new side door opening on to that pocket plaza between the building and Lululemon, it looks like they may be wanting to attract (or already have?) a restaurant/bar tenant with an outdoor patio. What a shot in the arm to street life on that block that would be.

Just thought I'd share an interesting population tidbit about Saskatoon's CMA that I stumbled upon.

According to Table 4 of this Stats Can link, Saskatoon's CMA had the highest percentage of population growth (32.6%) of all CMAs in Canada from 2007 to 2017. These stats are based on population estimates, by census metropolitan area.

That is some remarkable growth.

Pedestrian Bridges

The city is currently considering a proposal to build a new pedestrian bridge across the river between Circle Drive and Chief Mistawasis. It would do double duty by also carrying sewage pipes:

https://thestarphoenix.com/news/loca...e-across-river

Any thoughts? Any updates on the other proposed pedestrian bridge by the weir (which sounded like a great idea)?

Farmers Market considering finding another location. This would be a huge blow to the whole RiverLanding area...there must be some way to find a compromise that fulfills keeping the farmers market there, and still increasing activity in the building.

I bet people on here have great ideas they could share! I know it use to be a popular wedding venue, but they struggled with the amount of work to turn it around for the Farmers Market.

Sounds like the city has gotten a proposal from co-op to turn it into a privatized 7 days a week market, they are more of getting pushed out. I think this is fine, and the public one can be outside on the street like the old days or something. Most cities have private markets now like Eataly - I think co-op would do a business operation similar to that, while also inviting other typical local vendors. Co-op purchases a lot of local products under their label https://www.food.crs/tags?keyword=Produced%20at%20Home

I know we talked about a grocery store downtown a lot, but my preference would not be at the expense of the current Farmers' Market. It is just not a food venue, it is a tourist attraction and provides Saskatoon an amenity that many larger cities are able to offer...that being a permanent venue for local food, crafts and other items.

I really think it would be missed and a "seasonal outdoor' offering would not be the same. I know I personally seldom went to the Market when it was in front of downtown library, but now am a frequent visitor of the Saskatoon Market and it is always on our list of "things to do" when we have visitors.

I would still like to see some kind of proposal that enhances or expands the Market aspect while adding more options for revenue streams and adding "life to building" on the non market days.

Yes and I'm fairly sure this is public information - there was a couple organizations that submitted RFPs - which is now quashed with the issues of the roof falling apart.

Allowing a private corporation to "franchise" it would do wonders. Winnipeg's Forks development is unfranchised and it seems to be a mess like our market - everytime when I went there anyway it wasn't that pleasant. This is a place where I think privatizing it will add a lot more efficiency. As an agriculture centered community this should definitely be a stronger point wherever it is hosted. Yorkton's Farmer's market is held twice a week - if Yorkton can do two times a week how can we not do a full week? We have too many great local food products that are taking up entire aisles at our grocery stores - an entire store - SaskMade but not being utilized to their full potential.

A business plan similar to Eataly - an italian centered public market!

I'm not saying these are bad ideas, I'm just surprised the Saskatoon Co-op association (or was it FCL?) would be interested at all in this concept at this location. Have the two applications that were submitted to the RFP been made public at all? There are some things the city doesn't disclose due to confidentiality of private interests, so I was just asking to see it for myself if available.

The reason the Saskatoon farmers market has problems is the booths are not run by merchants. They are run by primary producers and processors. If you take a look at the Granville Island public market in Vancouver or the the market in Ottawa they are made up of independent merchants who buy local and have local stalls. They also operate 7 days a week since that is their full time job not some business they spend a few hours doing on the weekend.

The indoor market needs to become more professional and have real merchants. Each stall being separately owned and managed would be better than co-op.

A few items on agenda for Monday's City Council including the Urban Capital/Victory Majors Broadway project. Sounds like the folks from the neighboring condo "highrise" are opposing, but other then them appears to be little push back on this one....yay!

I still remember being at the public meeting when one older lady directed a comment to the representatives of the Broadway Highrise that were against the development saying "please don't take offense to this, but I am just happy this development isn't as ugly as the one already built"...haha

Council OKs condo tower, denies developers steer decisions
Council unanimously approves 17-storey, 112-unit for top of Broadway Bridge

PHIL TANK, SASKATOON STARPHOENIX Updated: February 25, 2019

Quote:
Saskatoon city council gave a unanimous go-ahead to a 17-storey condominium tower at the top of the Broadway Bridge.

Coun. Cynthia Block, who represents the Nutana neighbourhood where the building would be located, said decisions like allowing the project to proceed are made in the best interests of residents.

Council voted to approve the development after only three people turned up Monday night to register their opposition at a public hearing on the tower.

“These decisions are not made for the developer,” Block said.

Saskatoon’s Victory Majors Investment Corporation and Toronto’s Urban Capital Property Group are proposing the building for a vacant lot on Broadway Avenue at 12th Street.

The building includes two floors of commercial space, 112 residential units and 141 underground parking stalls.

Mayor Charlie Clark said city hall has made infill development a priority.

“We are going to see projects that propose density,” Clark said. “But that doesn’t mean any infill at any cost. We cannot make this about developers versus residents.”

Nutana resident Victoria Neufeldt and former city council candidate Howard Fullford each suggested at the public hearing Monday that council consider the impact on residents.

Neufeldt questioned building such a large structure along a “notoriously unstable (river) bank” that has been plagued by slumping within several blocks in either direction from the Broadway site.

“i think it would be a serious mistake,” Neufeldt said.

Council heard from a city engineer that the building is not expected to contribute to slope failure.

The proposed site is located a couple of blocks from a church along University Drive that is being converted into a seven-storey condo building. That project attracted considerable more opposition despite a smaller size, but council gave the developer approval in 2017.

In January, council approved a 12-storey, 171-unit condo building located on a vacant lot at the top of the University Bridge in the Varsity View neighbourhood.

Ethos Salon has closed at the Scotia Centre and they have rebranded as Empire on the 2nd level of building on 2nd Ave that houses the new Saskatoon’s Rattlers BBall franchise. This wasn’t any barber shop - they are the exclusive dealer of Aveda products which typically has a retail store in every city (not yxe yet). That puts the retail level of the Scotia Centre at well over 60% vacant - that must be a huge scare for the Scotia Center employees there.. with Nutrien leaving them, and the whole main level basically empty, what should they do with this building? Condos maybe??

I personally started going to High Noon on 4th which just upgraded there a few months ago from the idea incubator in riversdale
. Sure is awesome to see all these new hip barbershops opening across downtown!
