paris-based architect david tajchman has sent us images of 'operascope', an entry into the open international design competition for 'busan opera house', a new cultural complex in the north port area of busan, south korea. drawing from the form and structure of coral, the design features a skin constructed of several thousands of pyrex tubes which optically and kinetically distort the elements of the surrounding seascape.

When Roosevelt Island was given its name in 1973, the city’s intention was to erect a memorial to the country’s 32nd president at the island’s southernmost point, with sweeping views of Manhattan, foregrounded by the iconic U.N. slab. Architect Louis I. Kahn was commissioned the design, which he completed shortly before his sudden death in 1974. The timing of Kahn’s death occurred in conjunction with city, state, and national political and economic crises, and the project was shelved for over thirty years. A campaign was launched to restart the project in 2008, and sufficient funds were acquired to break ground last year.

OODA: busan opera house

portuguese firm OODA has sent images of their design proposal for the 'busan opera house' in busan, south korea. the iconic building reminiscent of a seashell is positioned on the edge of the sea symbolically projecting harmonious sounds to the world. the exterior undulates to engage the existing topography while creating a subdivided interior for cultural activities that integrates necessary program requirements for operas, musical venues, theater and sporting events. fluid bands wrapping the structure blur the boundaries between internal and external environments while introducing natural light and cross ventilation.

I think the thread should be renamed to only 'Cool Architecture' because the styles here goes much more than only 'modern'. Most of what was posted belongs to Late-modernist, Expressionism and futurism styles as well...

^Flavia, is a interesting twin building but the 4-cylinder in München has a engine piston concept. Has this also a 2-cylinder auto motor idea as well? I suppose not, maybe far only gears together.

Conix Architects to reform coastal Belgian community with 120,000 sq m project

In the context of the urban renewal policy of the city of Ostend, two competitions were launched by the Autonoom Gemeentebedrijf Stadsvernieuwing Oostende (AGSO) to select a private partner for the full reconversion and development of a new multifunctional city part on the maritime site Oosteroever. NV Oosteroever, in collaboration with Conix Architects, won both competitions.

UNO is embarking upon a master plan that will embrace soccer and the notion of soccer as a link between community, family, education, health, and nutrition as the catalyst for this master plan. The first project in this master plan will be the UNO New Elementary School. The school will set the tone for the future development and has been designed to inspire development in the area.

The project is currently under construction (scheduled to be completed by September 2011) and is pursuing LEED Silver Certification.
