That wasn't intended to starting a fight, I just think that we give cars a bad rap. They are one of the top three inventions, for me, in the modern era. I think if we can responsible use them through internalizing some of their external costs, then they become even more amazing. The car has liberated billions of people to see the world and visit places that were virtually impossible to middle and lowering income people.

As with any product as widely successful as the car, it has unintended consequences, but that doesn't make the invention itself evil! As cars become cleaner and perhaps emission free, maybe more can appreciate the blessing the automobile has been. Thank God for the car!

What do you mean by "internalizing some of their external costs?"

Perhaps the automobile was originally a liberator of sorts, but this is not the case now. Since it's invention, we've designed everything around the automobile. Now most people in the United States can not complete their daily tasks without an automobile. As a result people are enslaved to their automobile. Those who cannot afford or even want an automobile are disempowered.

Current Automobiles are a threat to public health. From car exhaust, and rubber dust from tires, to car collisions resulting in injury or death, and the jeopardizing of the pedestrian's safety, the common automobile is guilty as charged.

Starting about a week ago, UTA bi-level commuter cars have been rolling out of Bombardier Thunder Bay; I have seen three of them in the CP yards behind my apartment, on their way to New York for interiors, so far I got pictures of one, numbered 210. Didn't get a full shot but you all know what they look like.

The last shot gives you a peak at the interior before there is an interior. It was nice and shiny, and smelled like toxic paint and glue.

I'm always impressed how good airplanes and train cars look after they've been fixed up.

I always assumed airplanes were new until someone told me. But most transit riders won't know the difference, either.

I agree. I'm not a huge hybrid fan, but I do love fuel efficiency. I'm thrilled about the new CAFE standards. I love my car with a standard transmission, which I can coast down hills and toward red lights and save gas.

My next car is going to be a Corolla.

But I stand by what I say. All infrastructure is important. That means a lot more rail and a lot more highway.

Talk to the Chemical Engineers. I majored in Communications and in Planning, so I can't help you there.

All human products will have impacts. Solar cells kills ground cover. Wind power messes with bats. Neighbors make noise. Microwaves create negative ions which make it harder to fall asleep. Cars make dust.

Life goes on. Progress happens over time.

I love it when forumers post their location as some obscure place thinking that others know, or they list it as some sort of knickname. How about listing city and state??! ie. Portland, OR

North shore of Lake Superior, 190 miles northeast of Duluth, 300 miles north of Minneapolis, in Canada.

A small city, barely 130,000 people. Still one of the province's largest.

It's not that obscure of a place and it's not a nickname. That's the name of the city. If you didn't know where it was, you could've just googled it instead of being rude to the person from Thunder Bay.

Yes, I knew approximately where Thunder Bay was and had heard of it many times, which is why I don't think it's all that obscure.
