I beat the Oregonian on this one, but my junior reporting skills may lack a bit. Anyway, here's what I have so far (developing):

Pearl District Affordable Housing, “Abigail” will bring more Diversity

The Pearl District is getting more affordable housing. San Francisco developer, BRIDGE Housing, has plans to construct a six-story 142 unit building. The developer says, “the building will be mix-income, with 123 affordable apartments for families earning 30% to 60% of Median Family income, an the balance at market-rate rents.”

The architect behind the project is Ankrom Moisan Architects, a local Portland design firm. The building name has been dubbed, “Abigail.” It’s named after Abigail Scott Duniway, who was a Portland activist for women’s rights.

Pearl District project “Abigail” Building Amenities:

• Landscaped courtyards with children’s play area
• Commercial & commuinty space
• Laundry rooms on every floor
• Secure bicycle parking (will tool shop)
• Underground vehicle parking
• Storage closets
• 142 total units
• Six level mid-rise

BRIDGE Housing likes the Pearl District

This will be BRIDGE Housing’s first development outside of California. The CEO, Cynthia Parker, apparently has ground roots from the Pacific Northwest. ”We’re thrilled by the opportunity to partner with others and develop The Abigail,” said Parker. “We’re excited about working in the Pacific Northwest, where we believe BRIDGE’s core values are well-aligned. We are committed to building green and to being a great community partner with our mission of quantity, quality and affordability.”

With the addition of this community, it'll bring the tally to six affordable buildings in the Pearl District. Continuing to add more affordable housing will make the neighborhood more diverse, and hopefully overtime change the myth that the Pearl District is only for high-class earners.

At the corner of NW 13th and Raleigh, in other words. A block from the underside of the Freemont Bridge, across the street from a relatively new affordable apartment building whose name I can't recall for the life of me*.

This is that new student housing development, which sprung up way faster than I realized. I put it here, since I'm fuzzy on the border of the Pearl vs Old Town/Chinatown.

Technically, that's the Pearl. You can see it on the street sign in the second picture.


That building did go up fast, it'll definitely help that area. It's a shame it's right next to Firestone though. Worst Firestone location ever.

Losing one floor made a big difference IMO. I much preferred the orig. 7-floor proposal.

But I do like the creativity in the design.

That northend of the Pearl is really turning into quite a unique area for the city. I love how the downtown really feels like it goes from end to end of the 405.

I missed this building when I was in town last week, but it looks like an impressive building.

Yeah, the shape of the building is nice, I'm still skeptical about exterior material though.

That'll be a nice addition considering what's there now.

Even that would be nice, though, because currently it's a "telco hotel" which means it's occupied by a bunch of electronics. With no people.

You're right. I glanced at the wrong side of the block on Google maps. The other corner clearly shows it's the same building. Still, it'll be good to get life in there. It'd be better if they at least painted the thing.
