My BB induction really was Ill Communication. I had to work backwards to discover the earlier hiphop, and it's great, but being 12-13 at the time Ill has a special place in my heart.

I can't believe that I missed this thread becoming a Paul's Boutique thread.

Along with Fear of a Black Planet this is the Ulysses/Waste Land of the sampling Golden Age.

Check Your Head has a lot of feeling and is earthy and great but chaotic collage is more my thing.

It's an immature album with silly songs filled with misogyny that doesn't fit with the rest of the BB's career, but fun nonetheless. It's impact probably has much more to do with its' album art which is now flatteringly being imitated by Eminem for an audience that probably 75% doesn't know what it's referencing.

^ yeah, licensed is a monumentally immature and silly album, but i'll be damned if i don't smile from ear to ear from hearing the first few notes/beats of girls, paul revere, brass monkey, she's crafty, etc.

and what a sensation it was back in the day. it was THE soundtrack of the summer '87, you couldn't escape it.

For "millennial music" I've made the argument before that Animal Collective's Merryweather Post Pavilion is the Pet Sounds of its day.

I casually enjoyed the Beastie Boys growing up, but not enough to buy their albums. By the time I was in my early 20s and getting into hip hop for real, I was too elitist to listen to "mainstream" crap. So my introduction to hip hop was more Jurassic Five, Blackalicious, Dilated Peoples, Atmosphere, etc.

I don't think I've ever even heard a Steely Dan song. It doesn't sound like the sort of music I'd like though, from the description. I'm not big into guitar-focused music.

if you like your rock jazzy and your jazz rocky, then you'll LOVE steely dan. nobody has ever done it better.

but if you're not into the whole rock/jazz fusion thing, then yeah, probably not your cup of tea.

however, in my extremely biased opinion, it's some of the most finely crafted pop music of the 20th century.

I really dislike jazz, and other forms of noodly music like jam rock and the like. I'm sure it's fun to play, but it's not really fun to listen to, at least for me.

Actually I'm not really into "rock music" much either. I guess the most straight-ahead rock band I like is Spoon? Maybe some of the stuff PJ Harvey has done? Nick Cave?

If I listen to something on the rock continuum I'd much rather be listening to something that's post rock, chamber pop, shoegazer, etc. But I'm more into electronic music and hip hop in general.

Steely Dan is one of my favorite groups of all time. They've gotta be one of the most sampled bands by hip hop artists.

Very silly album but came out at the right time (for me at least) because Brass Monkey, and Fight For Your Right were fun in 6th grade. Wouldn't have appreciated them at 17 or 18 around when Check Your Head was released.

Not Gen-X'ers? They are/were absolutely Gen-X'ers rapping to other Gen-X'ers in the early to mid 90's.

Madonna debuted in 1983, prime time for older X'ers..those in their late 40's and 50's now and was a huge force throughout the 80's drawing in younger X'ers. The Madonna "wannabe" thing was huge with folks my age back then.
