This building has got to get the green light; it's just too original and stunning to get dumbed down or nixed.

Agree. It will be an iconic building in Vancouver, which is much needed given our, generally, bland architecture.

The Public Hearing is still going; it won't finish tonight, and it will continue on another date. Several speakers initially were in support, but there's also local opposition expressing concern about the scale of the building.

These people are clueless as usual. Patina towers over a building right next door in just the same fashion. Poor Patina "left in complete darkness". And they're saying this wasn't in the West End OCP? Is that true?

Haha, that's so cute seeing a article use be size of the Trump tower as a benchmark for something being "too big."

It really shows how insular the city of Vancouver has become regarding tower heights.

I know in their minds 178 meters must sound like a monster but it is currently Canada's 120th tallest building complete / UC / proposed... And Canada is not exactly known for its super falls either...

These people have nearly every other site in the downtown to have short stunted towers.
It perplexes me how this can frighten people...

"I want to live in the heart of a city! But oh my are moderately tall towers scary, I hope they build no such things near me..."

Could not even get through the article, was completely cringe worthy. They even said it will take away Green space, haha. Also love the perpetual darkness comment.

There was plenty of pubic consultation during the West End OCP process, and finally, after about 52 years of meetings and public input, a plan finalized. Stick to the goddam plan. Otherwise you wasted all that time and money only to chuck it in garbage for a few self serving, don't care about anybody else -people.

And that's what the city just did with its own official Chinatown plan. But a Westbank project wasn't directly affected by that decision, so maybe the city won't flip-flop on this official plan.

I hate to say it, and I know some people will get angry and call me a snob, as is sometimes the case .... but this is Vancouver, with its "keep it small-town" attitude.
Here, keeping things quaint and small-scale seems to nearly always be equated with liveability. It's a country kid that just refuses to grow up and join the mainstream.

I have come to a conclusion: We in society are giving too much credence to insane folks, and hear what they have to say. Worse still is when these same people are voted into power to lord over us.

As for the article, I guess it is fair for the Patina building to "eclipse" the nearby Vancouver Tower (IGA) and leave it in "perpetual darkness".

Instead of just bitching about it on here, is there any specific contact we should send an email to in support of this tower?

For the Public Hearing [email protected].

Otherwise email the Council. All of their emails are on vancouver.ca

The gold standard would be to attend the July 25th public hearing and speak in favor of the project. According to City Hall Watch, the hearing will start on speaker #9 of 35, so the wait time shouldn't be too bad.

The silver standard, but still really helpful, would be to send an email of support to
[email protected].

If you want you can back up your email with data from the staff report. However, even a short sentence or two saying why you like the project (ie height/rental housing/social contribution) still makes a big contribution.

The last thing is to attend other project's open house events, send emails to council and just generally voice support for more of what you want to see in Vancouver. None of that will help this project but it builds a case for the future.

I wont be in Vancouver until the 28th... so mathematically improbable for me to be there in person, but I did just send them my e-mail of support!
