Next Portland has the latest proposed drawings of this project. A big concern is to activate the ground floor because this Burnside / Alder block has been so dead. My first suggestion would be to change the Fitness room on Alder to Retail. And move Fitness to an inner inside corner on Level 3 with a small view of the roof terrace. Reasons: That location for an apartment is not desirable, and ground-floor fitness rooms almost always have obscured windows, making a dead zone along the sidewalk.

I was kind of hoping something taller would go on that site (without knowing off hand what the buildable height for that site would be.) I do like seeing that site get redeveloped because it is such a great key spot for urban redevelopment.

It looks very much like an office building. I just assumed it was until I saw the plans.

As someone who lives in Goose Hollow and walks by this site every day, can this be built TOMORROW? I like it!

Also, I have what may be a question with an obvious answer, but what is an "alcove unit" and how does it differ from a studio or 1BR?

I like it too. I assume an 'alcove unit' is a shotgun style unit, like this:

Or this:

Most places call them 1 bedrooms, as seen here and here.

It's very common in loft apartments, where the space is long and narrow, such as many units in The Edge, The Civic, The Avenue, etc etc etc. Here's one in Eliot Tower, for example.

That makes sense, and fits with the unit shape in the drawings. Thanks for the reply! I've seen a unit like this in my condo building; they put in some 3/4 height sliding doors to make it more of a "bedroom", though it's not completely walled off, and it's pretty "cozy" when you close the doors.

I have always thought these are terrible... Just a complete abdication of consideration for the end user in favor of designing the apartment solely for the developer's profit margin...

To each their own.

I am one of the few people that prefer a bedroom without windows. We are out there. I have a bedroom with windows and I always have the shades down and the curtains closed. I use my bedroom for sleeping, and a few other things that don't require natural light.

I'm the kind of person who prefers bedrooms with clerestory type windows, high up, short and wide. Privacy plus some daylight.

I've always preferred large windows in my bedroom. I had an apartment in the Hollywood Dist. that had one wall that was almost entirely window. It was awesome. I've always liked having plants in my room and having that much natural light definitely helps. Also waking up naturally to the sunrise is where it's at. But hey... to each their own. (I understand some of us have "Issues" with sunlight )
