I think it's meant to complement the tall ships in the area, and the Seaport in general (which itself is being rebuilt). I also don't think it looks like a great departure from Calatrava's design. Maybe if it were all white, that would show through more clearly.

Perhaps instead of blue they could've used hues that complement the pier 17 building.

This IMO would look stunning in bronze a la Mercury City MocKBa.

I like it, but it looks so rickety. Damn, I miss the old financial district skyline of spires (late 1920s-mid 1950s)

Calatravas design looks whimsical and innovative. This new design looks clunky and ill proportioned.

It just looks like it's trying too hard to have a distinctive figure, and be innovative. What happened to building towers that are just pleasing to the eyes, which the Calatrava design was. I'm not liking this one.

@Blaze:
Agreed. This form is just getting me all the more confused as to what it's trying to do.

I see.....then I'd hope to see the blue change to a hue like that of BofA's glass which IMO would complement this new design.

The new seaport will look underwhelming, unlike the render for this building.

It's too bad about the typos, but it's good to see this tower moving forward.

That article is almost exactly a year old, I wouldn't worry about typos.

Here's more from the actual interview...

I think this explains it

South Street Seaport owner changes tack
http://nypost.com/2014/03/25/south-street-seaport-owner-changes-tack/
Quote:
Frustrated by community activists who don’t want them to build a 50-story tower on the north side of Pier 17, South Street Seaport’s operator is now taking on a sky- high project an anchor’s toss to the south.
We’ve learned The Howard Hughes Corp. is in contract to buy 80 South St., an 8,128 square-foot parcel at South and Fletcher streets where City Planning has already approved a 1,000-foot-tall tower designed by Morali Architects.
Once targeted for Sky Cubes, a quirky Santiago Calatrava design proposed by Frank Sciame, the fully permitted building was scrapped in 2008 when no one wanted to buy the 10, $29 million-to-$30 million townhome cubes.
Sciame, whose offices are still in the building, recently transferred a $14.5 million mortgage back to the site’s Queens-based owner, Cord Meyer, which is selling the site and plans to HHC.
Meanwhile, the Seaport’s pre-land use review community working group has complained that HHC’s proposed 50-story tower on the former Fulton Fish market is out of character for the ’hood.
Owning and shaping the 80 South St. hotel and residential tower, possibly with its own Seaport project’s SHoP Architects, will let HHC maintain area design controls and inject some taller character. Calls to all elicited no comments or were not returned. Stay tuned.
Thank god we won't see that horror that was proposed.

Works for me, and I'm looking forward to it.
