East Hamilton and Stoney Creek is in for heavy rain warming today. Therefore Red Hill Creek Expressway is on high alert for possible flood again.

Yep it's wide but not the widest. That title belongs to the 401 by Pearson Airport. 18 lanes in the mainline with 4 more used as connecting ramps!

Crazy to see 18 lanes merge to just 6 west of here but they're working on a widening project in Mississauga that will fix that.

And lastly the road, sorry for the poor focus. 2 things not to do, drive the Canol road and use your camera at the same time. Reason I didn't get out, there was a bear behind the car.

In a couple years you will be able to get to the new international crossing over the Detroit River directly from the 401, via the new Windsor-Essex parkway, which will be very impressive. Can't wait for full construction to start this summer!

Construction starts later this year. Prep work begun in 2010.

Exciting project - looks good. I always assumed there was already a 401 freeway link through Windsor to Detroit.

Canadian junctions are very unique compared to the cookie-cutter US counterparts. Almost everything there is either stacked or a cloverleaf.

The centre median used to look like that too... they're slowly being upgraded to modern standards.

In fact I heard today an announcement to continue work on the 427 reconstruction later this spring. It's one of the last highways with vintage 1960's/70's medians/lighting since the old sections of the 401, 409 and the QEW were rebuilt over the last two years.


Ontario's freeway network is pretty modern by North American standards. It's quite small for it's population base so it's important to maintain and upgrade the routes.

I am fascinated with the Canol Road (and with roads in the territories in general....my dream is to drive up the Alaska, Klondike and Dempster Highways). Isn't most of Canol in the NWT, and long abandoned?

The Canol in Norman Wells NWT to Ross River Yk is a popular hiking trail And some coworkers have done parts of it on bike. The Dempster is a great drive I've been told, I've only done parts of it. Another to look at is the drive to Yellowknife then over the Liard Highway to the Alaska Highway.

I'm still trying to get up to do the Haynes Junction Yk to Haynes Alaska Bike ride. Or the race.
