davidcappi - thanks for posting site plans . The Napier Queen Market block is a bit intriguing, with a massive base - would have thought site could handle two towers at least. The hotel block with second tower along King also seems a bit low - 6 storeys especially for a direct LRT stop.

I find the Napier Queen Market block is not designed well. The massing is odd. A tower rising from the center of an expansive flat roof is unusual. I've seen a rough rendering, it's not pretty. There are no examples of this design approach anywhere I can think of. Oh wait.. Jackson Square?

I am betting that this application is denied by the design review panel for both these reasons. And I think that to be a good thing.

This project already went through design review, and I think because of the type of application I don't believe they're required to go through the panel again.

They have made changes to the development, would that not constitute a need for review?

Also what is the point of the design review panel if all they do is:

tall=bad

surface parking = meh

So, the render with a taller building instead of the 6 story one is looking more likely..?

Unless the crane is just for the 10 story hotel?

I have to assume that all these crane parts are possibly for Platinum condos across the street. Even that doesn't make much sense as there are no holes dug anywhere in the city in need of a crane that I'm aware of.

I drove by this morning on my commute and it did seem strange. Normally they would dig prior to setting up a crane. They are for a big crane though, not a little crane, so a bit strange if it were for a sales centre too. Not sure what it is for.

I think this development is apartments, so there wouldn't be a need for a sales centre.

Doesn't Darko have a site at 49 Walnut? I'm not sure how far along they are at that site, but it is gated and they have started digging. Maybe it's for that project?

It is a bit far, but maybe. They got approval and started right away eh? Is that Darko? He puts shit up fast, and seems to be one of the only developers interested in rentals. Or he builds them as rental then converts to condos so he can sell them quicker/more expensive/start building asap?

They've started site works and mobilization at the Walnut site. The reason I suggested that site is because it's another Darko project and maybe the location of drop off got mixed up? I've always given him kudos for beginning construction once he gets approval. You're only wasting/ losing money by letting the land sit after approvals.

I think he's sticking to the rental market. He was initially selling the units at 150 Main as Condos and then converted them to rentals after the majority of people moved in, only to start selling some of them again? I'm assuming he would have to wait until a tenants lease is up before trying to resell their unit? No clue. As far as I know, he's focused on just apartments now. I think the majority of units at 150 have remained rentals.

Looks like Darko is our modern version of Arthur Weisz (Effort Trust).

While I hope so, I have spoken to people who know Darko, and he doesn't sound as friendly or well-meaning as Arthur seems have been seen as.

The Walnut site is far from this site. Maybe the crane is for the Platinum as other suggested. I guess we'll know soon. It seems looking at the parts it'll be a pretty big crane.
