Whats up with everyone saying "hipster" in Vancouver?

I have never heard this term back home. Only in Van.

Its probably exactly what you are looking for, they host a lot of smaller acts and has a very hipster crowd.
Although for the non-band nights (ie: dancing) the crowds are very young and being someone in their low-30s, I felt quite old. But I see a ton of bands there and it's a great live venue. A real asset to the live music scene in this city!

That's big-city, cosmopolitan Montreal. This is Vancouver, a little more small-town, a little bit more behind the times in style. (I wonder what they say in Winnipeg?)

Haha

I think their heads would explode if they were to go to any of the entertainment districts in downtown Montreal on any weeknight.

the cobalt has also become pretty hipster - a lot of parties going on there - you just have to be in the know and whatever scene you are into to know what nights to go to

That website seems to be more about older, richer hipsters, and not so much on the younger, "scene" hipsters more seen in Vancouver. Still pretty funny though.

lol ok so non hipsters are basically people that don't like going to parties?

Now I understand why Vancouver is portrayed as No-Fun City. Everyone in this city keeps saying that basically people that like to go to parties (hence having fun) are hipsters. I understand now!

I just think that people who say others are hipsters are just unhappy with their own social life. There I said it!

I used to be hip but then they changed what hip was and now I don't know what I am.

I think that was a quote from Abe Simpson.

hipsters are people with ironic moustaches and skinny jeans and cardigans

the rest just go out and enjoy themselves

but they are usually found at certain venues in greater numbers and cobalt and biltmore is more hipster than say venue or roxy

Haha spongeG those pictures are like straight out of the dictionary.

honestly how have you guys never heard of hipsters? How old are you? It's not like it's a vancouver thing or anything.

The trusty urban dictionary can educate a few of the older posters here:

http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hipster

Whats wrong with what those people are wearing in the first picture. They just have their own style.

The way you people on here make it seem is that this "hipster" term is bad.

I for one don't wear that style but I definitely don't discriminate people from what they wear and don't use that excuse to avoid a certain party or concert venue that has people dressing like that. What the hell is wrong with people these days!?

"Oh I can't go to the venue on that night because there is a concert by The Killers and too many hipsters will be there. They ruin everything!"

Its truly really sad....

Clothing is often a reflection of a person's inner self. Hobbies, ambitions, interests, personality, can all be reflected through clothing. Now, I'm not saying that these people are 100% the same, but they are undoubtably similar. If somebody wishes to spend time with people with which they have things in common, so be it. I am the same way to a certain extent to different groups of people. If I can't break out into a conversation with a random person, I don't feel comfortable where I am, even if I never intend to get into said conversation.

The only sad thing here is how quickly you jump to conclusions. Who ever said hipsters are a bad thing. Tons of my friends are hipsters, be they indie or electro (There are many sub groups of the hipster)... its not a bad thing at all. In fact when I do go clubbing, which is getting more and more rare these days, I'm sure I come off as looking like one too.

When it gets bad is when they are scenesters

I'll let you hit up the urban dictionary for that one yourself.

Haha Well I have seen many times in the forum the word "hipster" and it is always portrayed in a negative way. So yeah, I don't jump quickly to conclusions. It has been building up.
