I have to agree with you. I'm pleased about the extra shopping options at Bayshore, but the expansion is a bit of a disappointment. The two floors of mixed retail are dark and cramped. Target taking up the entire top of the expansion ruined the opportunity to extend the skylights, which is a real shame. The new food court is great, although it can't compare to Rideau's in food options and it doesn't have a scullery. The renovation of the existing mall is quite nice, the flooring and the railings especially. It's an ok effort overall but I think once Rideau is finished and the expansion opens it will finally overtake Bayshore as my preferred option when mall shopping.

Leaving the architectural aspect and store/food court selections, which come and go, aside for a second, I currently (I have not seen the Rideau expansion) prefer Bayshore over Rideau for 2 reasons

- Easy commute from Barrhaven
- Free Parking

Looks like Forever 21 is opening this Saturday!

Also, does anyone know how many more retailers that are coming as part of the expansion have yet to be announced, and when they will be opening? I'm curious especially regarding the Lego and Disney stores.

Regarding the Disigual store:
http://www.retail-insider.com/retail-insider/2014/10/desigual

Quote:
Colourful, moderately-priced casual Spanish clothing brand Desigual is aggressively expanding, with plans to open stores across Canada. It has already secured several high-profile locations, and we're told that negotiations are ongoing for more Canadian stores.

...

Desigual's Ontario and Alberta franchises are to be operated by women's fashion apparel retailer J. Michaels, with lease deals being coordinated by a Toronto-based broker. So far, Desigual has secured at least two Ontario locations, including a large store in Toronto's Distillery District, as well as a location at Ottawa's Bayshore Shopping Centre. In Alberta, West Edmonton Mall is confirmed for a 1,500 square foot Desigual store, replacing retailer French Connection. A Desigual outlet store will also open next week at the Premium Outlets Montreal.

Starting on the 19th until the Fall, the pedestrian walkway to the 2nd level HB entrance from Bayshore Station will be blocked with the parking construction

If Target leaves Canada, Bayshore would need a rethink as it would have a big hole in the east end of the mall...

I would welcome that big hole. The bottom two floors of the expansion are cave-like and dark. Maybe if Target left they could extend the skylights and open it up.

I as well would welcome it! Perhaps it would allow for that entire end of the mall would look less like a Giant Target too. I would hope Target would have to pay for that renovation.

Looks like that is indeed happening. Will the Bayshore location still open for the time being or not?

I'd assume they'd halt development on this location altogether. I was there last weekend, and the signage still wasn't up (on the interior anyway). I think a giant white target symbol is hung on the side of the mall's exterior wall facing the QEW though. The 3rd floor entrance in the mall was papered up, so I couldn't see inside to gauge how much interior work had been done, but enough work had been done on the entrance itself (new walls w/ cladding, and 1 or 2 glass panels).

It's not even open yet!? Doubt it will now. Seems the "Target" letters have been there for a while but the logo was never installed (or vis-versa). EDIT: just realized citydwlr already mentioned it

Anyway, after the whole renovation and cladding half the mall with red plastic, I guess they will have to re-clad that whole section.

One of the news articles said the Bayshore employees had just arrived for training at the Target at Hazeldean mall today and were sent home. Someone on twitter said a sign was being taken down too.

Ok, sounds like they've ceased development then.

Here's a quote from the Citizen article (http://ottawacitizen.com/business/local-...-of-ottawa-retail-employees-to-lose-jobs) regarding the new Bayshore employees on training at Hazeldean..

"“One fellow came out and said, ‘I’ve been unemployed for 2½ years and when I finally get a job if only lasts an hour.’ “

So who do you guys think will anchor that space now that Target is officially out? My pick is MARSHALLS, or Wal-Mart?

Marshalls? There is already a Winners in the mall, they aren't going to cannibalize themselves.

Very, very difficult to say. There isn't an obvious retailer that comes out front in my mind. Upscale retailers would be likely to stick to the Rideau Centre (Ottawa's undisputed "A" mall nowadays), while downscale retailers would be scared away by the layout, even though they would be attracted to the immediate local population as well (but not the broader economy of west Ottawa).

Sony closing too, another void, but that is a way smaller space, so it should be easier to fill
