James North Street Art

I am not sure how this hasn't been posted yet, but the city has received some proposals for public art to be installed at James and Murray and they are now asking for public consultation on the proposals.

Go to http://www.hamilton.ca/CultureandRec...hPublicArt.htm and review the proposals. You have a chance to rank your first, second and third choice of preference for the public art to be installed here using the online voting at this page. Just click where it says "Review the artists' proposals and make your selection".

Input is being accepted until Friday so it's not too late to have your say on this public art installation. Personally, I liked the leaf bench, the rail carpet, and the time line site line proposals.

Thanks for posting that! I went for the Leaf Bench, I Dream of Trains, and the Time Line Site Line.

Three art instalments selected for James North

http://www.thespec.com/news/local/ar...or-james-north

The City of Hamilton has awarded the creators of three art instalments with public art commissions for James Street North, set to be installed next summer.

They have also selected three finalists for a public art commission at the Hamilton police central station on King William Street.

For James North, the city’s culture department has awarded artists Vesna Jocic and Nicko Elliot for Roll Out the Rail Carpet; Yvonne Felix, for 6. Murray Street; and Peter Osborne and Sean Solowski for Time Line Site Line.

Each design has been awarded $1,400.

The proposals were reviewed and scored by a jury of volunteers from local community and art groups, and more than 380 people participated in the public consultation.

The three finalists for the police station are: Officer and Community Odalisque, by Leslie Drysdale and Sandor Monos; The Magnifying Glass and Sundial, by Yvonne Felix; and Shield by Tor Lukasik-Foss.

The competition now moves to public consultation, with the proposals posted on the city’s website and at the central branch of the Hamilton Public Library until Jan. 23.

The winner will be announced Feb. 11

To review the projects visit www.hamilton.ca/arts/JamesStreetNorth or www.hamilton.ca/arts/policeservice

A bar on James serves / allows a drunk in: 2 week suspension.
Several bars on Hess serve hundreds of drunks every weekend: business as usual.

My thoughts exactly.

Seems like somewhat random/sporadic enforcement.

Key difference: Hess Village drunks are suburban, affluent, well dressed. 5 Star drunks are inner city scum.

I think there have been more in the Spec but they screwed up their database a while back and a lot of their links are damaged or vanished.

Anything is available at the right price, those last two properties have been listed for a couple years. Looking at james north gallery and the INC, you can tell which buildings are really for sale.

A BIA beef is brewing...

”We the undersigned are vehemently opposed to the inclusion of James Street North into the BIA community.”

(H/T @JoeyColeman)

Among the local players notably absent from the roll of signatories are Downtown Hamilton BIA members and James North owners John Mokryke and Tim Potocic.

It’s interesting to see the borders of the Downtown BIA in May 2007, when it already incorporated James North as far as Rebecca. Border expansion seems like a natural step given EcDev's Downtown Hamilton Community Improvement Project Area (also from early 2007), but nothing is for sure. Except maybe the drama that will ensue.

could someone enlighten me why the BIA is "vehemently" opposed to the inclusion of James Street?
