Here is a link to the March 16, 2011 development agreement, which gives details about the Hazelton

If the rest of the plan shown below is built then this will be a very large development. Based on the 75 units in the Hazelton times 8 highrises, it would be in the 600 unit vicinity for the total development (about half as many as King's Wharf). Are there enough people to fill all of these buildings being planned and under construction in the HRM? I hope so; once HRM gets up to 500,000 people then the province will start showing some significant yearly population growth (boosted by the HRM).

It's funny how if this gets built it will, to some extent, look like what the urban parts of HRM should with pedestrian-scale streetfronts, setback highrises, solid grid pattern, and rear parking lots. It's also strange that this is right next to the busiest road in HRM and considered part of an industrial park.

If most of this goes through I think it might be time for HRM to pay some attention to this whole area (Wright's Cove). It would cost some money but sometime in the medium-term (5-10 years) the effort should be made to widen Windmill Road for a inbound bus/turn lane, improved aesthetic appeal (ie boulevard), and develop the municipally owned lands on Bancroft Lane (Mcdonald's area). Also designating all of the under-utilized lands west of Windmill Road as CDD (comprehensive development district) with certain requirements like a new through side-street.

Dartmouth development underway

The first project is underway in what a developer hopes will become a $250-million “urban village” near Wrights Cove in Dartmouth.

Harbour Isle Halifax Inc. of Toronto received its building permit Tuesday to build the Hazelton, a 12-storey, 89-unit residential tower off Windmill Road.

Originally slated to start construction in the spring, the Harbour Isle development has gone through several fits and starts over the years. In a previous incarnation, it was known as Sheppards Island condominiums.

“It’s been a long journey, but we’re finally there,” project manager Dan Dean said in a telephone interview Wednesday.

There were about 7 excavators on site today doing some digging work, along will bulldozers and steam rollers.

I'm excited to see this one underway. This has been sitting idle for far too long. The website now lists it as under-construction. Where it is no longer 17-9-9-9 should it be reset to 12fl for now as the Hazelton is the first confirmed building?

I drove by the site last evening. More machines onsite than previous week. Looks like sewer/drainage is being installed in the area that willl be mostly commercial.

Crane is going up today. It's an orange one. I seen it around before but can't remember where. Good to finally see this lot getting developed. I hooey that they find enough people to live there!

It is good to see this one progressing. We will have to wait and see how much demand there is in that area but I think boating/sailing enthusiasts will be interested (I think there is a marina close by).

You really get around the HRM kpho6. Thanks for posting the pictures.

This one is going almost unnoticed, I guess because it is a bit off the beaten path.

I like the fact that it is kind of "off the beaten path" and filling in the waterfront area . I would love to see the waterfront developed from Dartmouth to Halifax and all the way around the Basin.

Could someone tell me if this is more of a suburban or urban style development?

From the looks of the plans and based on what I have seen of the road layout, it is going to be an urban setting. Commercial near Windmill Rd. and condos/apts throughout the rest of it.
