no clue....I've never seen a power centre done properly around here. I'm not holding out hope that this will be either.

Pulling back the hours quite a bit--makes sense I guess, my understand is most of the in-line stores are closed now anyway, right?

Yes they are. About 70% of the mall is empty now I'd say. Incredibly depressing to walk the halls now.

Anyway theres huge ads up on the hoarding on the outside now, advertising for what little stores are left and phrases up like "ITS COMING SOON", "WE'RE SO EXCITED", etc. Apparently Redcliffe is really excited about their development.

What's left, off the top of my head...

Sears
Zellers
All the banks
The Source
Carlton Cards
Payless Shoes
EB Games
Shoppers Drug Mart
Haircrafters plus a few other hair places.
Peoples
Stitches
Dental Office
A&W
Wok Express
Tim Hortons
Subway
Saint Cinnamon

Someone should go and photograph it before it's torn down.

I'm a bit surprised that there isn't more construction happening. I didn't see any framing up for the new stores when I was there the other day. Unless it's behind the big pile of dirt out back.

My source for Centre Mall updates has moved on to her new job so don't think I'll have anymore inside information.

There's a couple more smaller stores including Easyhome, thats about it though. I was just in there 3 hours ago, so sad.

I'll try to get pictures in there next week. Last time I tried, security gave me a hard time so I'll ask them about it ahead of time this round.

That image belongs on the cover of Brave New World. Crap, crap, and more crap. This spot would have been great for urban infill - plot some streets, subdivide the land and put in stores with apartments along with streets of single family homes. There are firms that do those types of developments, why couldn't we seek them out? There's money to be made in reconstructing neighbourhoods as well as putting up this run of the mill garbage. There's just fewer people in that business.

^^ but then where will everyone park? haha

I agree, this development is pretty bad... but it's better than it could have been/was.

The only bit of hope I have left is that BY CHANCE they'll have entrances facing the street... but this is unlikely.

They'll have streetfront entrances all right. Only they'll be locked with a hand-written sign taped to the glass door that says "Please use other entrance"

Malls have a place as a community centre of sorts. I hate that this one is being torn down.

They have developed that way BCTed. Unfortunately in the past 10 years or so malls have been divided into two categories--haves and have nots. While money has been pumped into centres such as Lime Ridge, Eastgate, Burlington and Mapleview--others, such as the Centre, have been left in a state of benign neglect. While Redcliffe appears intent on maintaining Eastgate as a viable enclosed mall, it obviously never had any intention of "reviving" the Centre as is. Too bad they didn't consider stripping the mall down to it's original form--then surrounding that with it's big box units...it could have been really attractive back in it's original open-air form. Nonetheless it would appear that in order to attract the interest of retailers and lenders, it needs to start from scratch where that property is concerned.

Construction is starting on the TD Canada Trust at Barton/Kenilworth. They're also prepping the space directly West of it for construction. The driveway out to Barton from Zellers/The Barn has also been closed off and dug up.

Nice! As far as I could tell last time I was in the area, it seems like the buildings will actually be pretty damn close to the street.
Does it still seem that way? How about the TD?

They have started with the footings for the new Zellers at the rear of the present Zellers.
