Part of the problem is the fact that spire heights aren't included in official DOB filings, but are shown on drawings in the zoning diagram. The drawings are usually a reliable source for height, but this one hasn't had an updated filing.
As far as filings, these are the last two that reflect building heights...

I love pictures like that with gray skies. The Chrysler Building looks spectacular. One Vanderbilt will as well. I don't know if I've ever seen a rendering of any building with a cloudy sky...
every time i look at the renders i am reminded how they really did an impressive job with designing the base of this one. it looks functional, open and it presents itself well to the public in that busy, high profile setting.

I really like how is gestures towards the station. The transparent glass really opens it up and makes the base into a more public space.

^ On that note, I really wish, instead of the orange-colored stone throughout the lobby, they use limestone or gray cladding of some kind to better compliment with Grand Central.
