They did the same for the Aberdeen Bridge over the 403 in Hamilton in 2010.

Very cool to have a new bridge completed overnight.

http://www.morrisonhershfield.com/newsro...eplacementProject%20of%20the%20Year.aspx

In August 2010, the Aberdeen Avenue Bridge superstructure over Highway 403 was completely replaced within 51 hours, becoming the first rapid bridge replacement for a multi-span continuous bridge in North America.

Wow, I don't think I've ever seen a bridge structure simply picked up and carried away, and then replaced in the same manner before. That was impressive.

It is very impressive. It is becoming a fairly common practice in Ontario. It has been done three or four times in Ottawa (with another one planned for this summer), and now a couple of times in the GTA. I think it is quite an expensive process, but engineers like its minimal disruption to traffic.

Consider it has taken crews more than a decade to replace the Humber River Bridge using convention methods on Hwy 401 in Etobicoke.

Well its not like you can roll a bridge into place what with there being a river right underneath it n'all.

I drove from Vancouver to Langley and back today and thought of posting some views of the new Port Mann Bridge and completed sections of Trans-Canada Highway.

Approaching Cape Horn intersection from Lougheed Highway:

Ramp onto Trans-Canada Highway:

Cape Horn intersection:

Crossing the new Port Mann Bridge (the widest bridge in the world with 10 lanes):

152nd street intersection:

160 St intersection:

Freeway, baby! Between 160 St and 176 St:

192 st / Golder Ears Bridge intersection:

Trans-Canada Interstate 1:

Widening work at 248 St:

View from 176 St bridge:

As a bonus the new and old Port Mann Bridges as seen from the South Frasier Perimeter Road below.

15 lanes above!

Re: rapid replacements, would such be viable for some of the bridges in Montreal? Since there are still a lot of them that are in bad shape (fewer than there once were though). Although I do believe a full closure of the Metropolitaine is necessary soon for a total reconstruction...

I don't know how they will replace the deck of the Metropolintaine in Montreal without a full closure. The deck is so narrow on the elevated portion, that it would be difficult even to replace two lanes at a time as they have done with the Gardiner in Toronto over the years.

That said, even with A-30 open serving as a by-pass, the Metropolitaine still carries an awful lot of traffic.

Oh cool pics of the Port Mann project! Thanks for taking them!

I really like the new signs they are putting up there. They look so... European (with a Canadian twist).

Thanks for the pictures Klazu, that last one from underneath really shows the massive scale of the bridge.

Looking pretty dry out there too, nice to see at least someone's getting a summer this year!

Amazing Golden Ears Bridge shots. When I lived in Van during the nineties, the infrastructure was woefully inadequate...I HATED relying on the Port Mann Bridge (also Patullo, Second-Narrows, Oak St Bridge, etc....only the Alex Fraser had the necessary capacity). Lion's Gate bridge is very nice to look at but absurdly inadequate.

Yep, in the last few years we have added the new 6 lane Golden Ears bridge, replaced the old twin 2 lane swing Pitt River Bridges with a new 7 lane bridge (expandable to 8), and now the new 10 lane Port Mann Bridge has replaced the old 5 lane one.

Good news is the Massey Tunnel and the the Patullo are both being planned for replacement. New West is really stalling the Patullo project though, they have Vision Vancouver disease where the thinking is extreme black and white and all high capacity roads = bad.

Thank goodness the province has been jamming through all these more than necessary improvements to our road network.

Don't forget we now have the SFPR almost done, a new 40km highway that directly links Delta / the ferries to Surrey and the #1 before 200th. Things are a lot better here now!

But it needs the interchanges built!!!
Lets hope it functions ok without them for as long as possible, but given the average rate of acceleration for truck traffic, I'm not too optimistic.

At least it will be a very useful road in the off-hours, or on weekends.
And definitely a major improvement over having NO contiguous route along the south shore of the Fraser River.

At least they built the 99 / SFPR junction as a full major interchange. I have a feeling the interchanges will be built within 10 years akin to when the 91 opened in the late 80s.
