I was fortunate to be invited to tour the Ground Zero construction site in lower Manhattan prior to the opening of the 9/11 memorial and museum.
These kiosks are located on the south side of the memorial / museum. Initially, they will be used to help victims' friends and families determine where to find the names of their loved ones. Subsequently, they will also be used to sell admission tickets.

Museum Should be Free $$$

Perhaps I'm spoiled from the free museums here in DC, but this museum absolutely should not be charging admission. It's critical that everyone should be able to enter the museum in order to remember what happened that day, and they should be allowed to go back whenever they feel the need to do so. Most people in this country are struggling enough as it is, and just trying to stay in New York or anywhere even remotely close to it is more expensive than traveling to any other city in the US, bar none. New York is STUPID expensive, and that's coming from a DC resident where living costs are already higher than almost everywhere else in the US.

Congress should appropriate money for this museum and the memorial's maintenance costs, either through the Smithsonian Institutions, the National Park Service, or through dedicated, lock-in legislation that guarantees an annual continuous revenue stream. It should be handled on a federal level because this is, and will increasingly become, a national issue and a national destination, and a national pilgrimage site. If this becomes another $20 museum, it will be sending the wrong message, especially with Wall Street right next door. 9/11 affected everyone, and by charging for admission, you're filtering some of those people out. I understand that $20 in New York is almost like $5 everywhere else, and I know that I'm just pulling that number out of my ass, but just the principle of charging admission, even if it's 10 cents, is wrong in this circumstance. It's inappropriate.

NY1 Exclusive: New Poll Reveals Split Feelings On 9/11 Memorial
By: Asa Aarons

http://www.ny1.com/content/top_stori...-9-11-memorial

A new NY1/Marist poll has found a significant difference in opinion about the National September 11 Memorial and Museum, as about half of surveyed New Yorkers plan on visiting the memorial within the first six months and most oppose a $25 donation as the price of admission to the museum. NY1’s Asa Aarons filed the following report.

Quote:
On Sunday, it belongs to the families, but on Monday, the 9/11 memorial opens to the public.

Access is limited because the area is still under construction, but organizers say nearly 400,000 people have already requested reservations to visit the site.
However, aside from the initial interest, an exclusive NY1/Marist poll reveals that barely more than half of New Yorkers interviewed say they are likely to visit it within the first six months. Of those surveyed, 49 percent say it's unlikely that they'll visit in that time.

The National September 11 Memorial and Museum will open its doors next year. Annual operating costs are expected to be about $60 million, and nearly 50 percent surveyed believe the federal government should foot most of that expense. On the other hand, 43 percent of New Yorkers surveyed believe the museum visitors should pay for it.

There are heated opinions about charging visitors to visit the museum. When the idea of an admission donation was first brought up, museum organizers initially proposed $25, but 80 percent of New Yorkers said that's too much. Nineteen percent said $25 is appropriate, while one percent said it’s too little.

Organizers said the amount is not set in stone and depends on how much federal aid the museum can expect.

Still, the idea of charging is controversial.

“I don’t think it should be free, but $25 is way too much,” said one resident.

“I would hope that a small portion of the proceeds would go to people who are still suffering,” said another.
The Marist poll was conducted among New Yorkers in all five boroughs from July 20 to 27.

Pollsters say there is a margin of error of about 3.5 percent.

$25 is a bit much for a regular person wanting to see the museum... but i do understand that this museum costs a lot of money to built and maintain,
This is kinda stupid but i think they should charge:
$9 for Children
$11 dollars for Adults.

I'm willing to pay up to $20 if ALL the money goes to the people who are still affected by 9/11. Especially those who are suffering from cancer and other diseases but can't afford treatment.

Agreed. Or at least admission until it recoups part of the cost of building the memorial but eventually I would like to see it free.

Yes, it's just West of the South Pool. Because it is an Ornamental Pear Tree and not a White Swamp Oak like the others, it has a distinctly different shape from the surrounding trees.
