They had Matadors in Hazzard County during the early California episodes, although some of the jumps were reused in later seasons. This scene was filmed on Springbrook Avenue in Santa Clarita.

After a good round of Googling, I've drawn a blank on the early years, but here's what I've come up with so far. Firstly, the address is 3472 South Centinela Avenue. There are several listings for the property at loopnet.com, who describe it as "Formerly Wild Oats Market; High ceilings, bow truss construction." Like Those Who Squirm , they also list the construction date as 1946.

American Flowers seems to be the most recent tenant as there are Yelp.com listings for earlier this year.

Mrs. Gooch's Natural Foods Market was there before the Wild Oats Market. According to this article, substitute school teacher Sandy Gooch opened her first store here in 1976. Other sources say January 1977. Either way, the chain was acquired by Whole Foods Market in 1993. I'm not sure if the picture below is left over from Mrs. Gooch's store, or the Wild Oats Market.

There was some discussion about future uses of the store early last year, but the property has come back to prominence recently with plans to make it "what's expected to be the city's largest marijuana dispensary":

Saint James Park, Saint James Place, and Chester Place, adjacent to the downtown campus of Mount St. Mary College, all seem to have or have had and address numbered 86. 86 Chester Place may still exist but GSV doesn't go there. It's hard to tell because of the luxuriant greenery. There are a number of possibilities for our subject "86" house--I'd say the Pasadena vicinity is most likely--but not Chester Place or St. James Park, though they do have 2-digit addresses, having been conceived as private streets. (Chester Place remains private, if not St. James Park.) Like Berkeley Square, neither had addresses as high as 86; Chester topped out at 22, SJP at 44. ("St. James Place" is a more modern designation--the streets of SJP have had varying names over the years. The east-west roadway between Chester and Scarff was West 25th early on...anyway, the addressing along that stretch is a Gordian knot.)

After a bit more online rummaging, I found this entry under "Markets" in the Santa Monica phone directories.

Surely a market at 3474 Centinela Avenue has to be the same building as the one which is now listed at 3472 South Centinela Avenue. The listing is there from 1948 to 1950, but then disappears, so what became of the building between 1950 and 1976? In the 1946 phone directory, Seymour's Market was at 4014 Sepulveda.

If 3474 is included in the search, here are a few more possible clues:

I wondered if there might have been an automotive use of the property...but then, it says "private party"--could mean anything, a grocery-store manager's private sale, for instance.


Apparently it was a grocery in 1963:

I didn't come up with a Lloyd's Market in the area in a search of city directories at the LAPL....


Mrs. Gooch's appears to have opened in January 1977--note the third variation on the address:

Based on the research thus far, it's pretty clear the Centinela property must have been a supermarket all along, just passing through different owners.

I'm going to assume the three different street addresses (3472, 3474 and 3476) are based on the different entrance ways used on the property.

My memories of Mrs Gooch involve pale organic chickens and carob soft serve.

The vacant building is now painted completely black. Very odd. Maybe if it becomes the largest marijuana dispensary, they'll shine black lights on it and it'll glow. Groovy, man.

On the subject of telephone buildings I noticed this gem in Long Beach. Of course there are many buildings that share/shared similar design elements, especially the vertical fluting. (Bullock's Wilshire's porte cochere?) Suspect this structure was a casualty of the '33 Quake, requiring either a substantial remake, or a rebuild.

With the name Lloyd's Market to look for, I found a listing in the 1963 directory.



Lloyd's Market seems to disappear from the "Markets" section for a few years, but I managed to find them in the regular listings. They reappear in the "Markets" section in 1975, but suggest visiting their main advert in the "Meat-Retail" section. I may have missed other listings as these phone books are much slower to navigate than the City Directories.



By chance, I spotted this advert in the 1985 phone book. Centinela Hardware would have been just south of Palms Boulevard from Lloyd's Market. I don't know how long it lasted (it was 25 years old by the time of this advert), but there's a realtors called The Bizzy Blondes at that address now.

The street number certainly fits with a Westwood Village address, and would be somewhere just north of Kinross on the western side of the street. I don't think it ever existed on Gayley or Westwood, though. One of the other streets, perhaps?

Once upon a time there was another building in Pasadena that went by the name of "Home Telephone and Telegraph" at 600 East Green Street. The building's relief work deserves honorable mention. One source indicates building was erected in '25. Photos are from '28.
