I remember once reading an engineering report about the history of using pilings in building foundations in New Orleans, and it discussed that the Charity building was one of the first major buildings to use them. The builders used 50’ wooden piles which were initially fine but a few decades later the building began to settle, cracking the limestone by the windows on the first floor. The report then showed pictures almost identical to the ones above, where you can still see those cracks. This was a lesson for later built buildings to use deeper piles.
