Hangzhou urban planning bureau has announced MVRDV winner of the international design competition for the China Comic and Animation Museum (CCAM) in Hangzhou, China. MVRDV won with a design referring to the speech balloon: a series of eight balloon shaped volumes create an internally complex museum experience of in total 30.000m2. Part of the project is also a series of parks on islands, a public plaza and a 13.000m2 expo centre. Construction start is envisioned for 2012, the total budget is 92 million Euro.

McAdam Architects competes for landmark mixed-use development in Sochi

McAdam Architects, in a joint venture with Moscow-based Ginzburg Architects, has been shortlisted for a 40,000 sq m mixed use ‘Sputnik’ multi-storey development in the resort city of Sochi (Krasnodar region), on the Black Sea coast, southern Russia.

The £75m project is located in a formal parkland setting, along Kurortny Prospekt - the main boulevard through Sochi - and in a prominent elevated position, overlooking the main harbour and marina. This prime site provides a landmark development location, as a symbolic gateway to the city and a beacon to the coast line frontage.

The Souk, Abu Dhabi Central Market by Foster + Partners

Foster + Partners have completed a new shopping centre that combines high-end boutiques with independent local food and craft markets on the site of a historic city marketplace in Abu Dhabi.

The new Souk Market has been designed as a sequence of courtyards and alleys, integrating balconies and colonnades.

Muscat Cultural Center / AS Architecture Studio

A new interpretation on ancient Omani architecture is explored by the Muscat Cultural Center by AS Architecture Studio. The design won the design completion to assemble the nation’s cultural heritage under one roof. A single large building with parametric roof sections perforated for light and air, the complex filters sunlight onto the large public spaces. A central courtyard is surrounded by Oman’s National Theatre, National Archive and National Library.

Firm embarks upon first construction project in Hanoi with high-rise commercial tower

Today the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation Headquarters was held in Hanoi. The Cement Industry Corporation’s head office is the first project for Jürgen Engel’s architectural studio in Vietnam to be built. The new premises for the Vietnam Cement Industry Corporation, which is comprised of a five-storey pedestal building and an approximately 135m high tower, emerged as the victor in a competition as early as April 2008.

Bumps Building, a mixed-use building in the Chaoyang District of Beijing.

The building is characterized by its constant variation between levels, with every two floors occupying a unit.
Every unit is staggered by two meters, with the open space being used for terraces. The building is a total of 80 metres in height.

Silvertree Residential Eco-Tower / Studio RHE

Silvertree, designed by Studio RHE, is a landmark 24-storey ‘green’ apartment tower located in London’s Royal Docks. It has been granted planning approval and will commence construction in summer 2011. The mixed-use tower will house 161 high-quality 2-3 bedroom apartments, retail and office space and a cafe.

Japan’s Namba Parks Has an 8 Level Roof Garden with Waterfalls

When we think about shopping malls, the typical image that comes to mind is a bland series of interconnected boxes with the food court probably being the most exciting part. Well Namba Parks, a massive retail and office compund in Osaka, Japan, totally blasts away the boring stereotype of what a mall is supposed to look like. Built in the footprint of the old Osaka baseball stadium, the awesome development, which was completed in 2003 by the Jerde Partnership, has an eight level rooftop garden that spans several city blocks and features tree groves, rock clusters, cliffs and canyons, lawns, streams, waterfalls, ponds and even space to grow veggies!

I really like the secondary skin they're adding to some of these buildings (the Hanoi one and Silvertree in particular). I don't know if they're using them solely as decoration or to cool the building, but it'd be nice to see more of that down here, where we're constantly fighting the sun.

Top Terminal for the Reißeck Incline Railway in the Austrian Alps

The Austrian hydro power firm Verbund is planning the construction of a new mountain restaurant at 2250m above sea level. The same building is also to house the top terminal for the Reißeck incline railway, as well as information and display areas. The Viennese architects, Zechner & Zechner, have been chosen for the project, from among a field of international competitors.

Hotel development an exciting new gateway concept for ski resorts

St Falls, the building created as a new gateway for Falls Creek, is literally a dream, its moth-like form representing the local Tawonga Aboriginal 'dream-time' mythology of the Bogong moth.

Beton Hala Waterfront – An open landscape for Belgrade / Erik Giudice Architects

The layout for the Waterfront Center takes it’s departing point from the linear structure of the existing Beton Hala. By concentrating the program on a linear strip, a park is created towards the Castle and a large multi activity promenade along the river.
