How odd to see a German postcard of a Dutch bakery in the USA! Great picture BTW.

Actually, they are African Daisies. They are also called "Freeway Daisies" because they are a staple planting along banks of freeways. The yellow form, which these appear to be, are very hardy and once they are put in, you cannot get rid of them. They live in low water conditions and spread prolifically.

A Shasta Daisy is a taller plant, two and a half feet or so, with the flowers on long stems

my bad. -from a distance they resembled dandelions. (I was raised in the midwest where dandelions abound)

-thanks for the information/corrections on Betty Compson/Charles Ray house(s) GW. It's amazing they're two separate houses!

A fantastic view of Hollywood Blvd. at Highland Ave. (note the J.C. Penney)

-this was written on the back. (note the word ethereal )

We've discussed the Hollywood Hotel numerous times on the thread, but I don't remember it being built as a Catholic institution.

The same picture appears on the LAPL site:

Car driving through water on West Adams Boulevard on the last day of December 1933.

lapl.org

They also have this one:

Wide body of water on West Adams Boulevard during flooding on December 31, 1933.

While the photo indicates 1934 (probably the publication date), the LAPL dates this same shot as actually having been taken on Dec 31, 1933. The library also has the wider view below; both are noted as being West Adams Blvd. Based and the width and the lamps, this would be toward Culver City. Don't think I've ever seen the unusual STOP sign or light....

Edit--PS: Looks like this would have actually been in Culver City... the last of those lamps are going. See http://culvercitytimes.com/profiles/...bites-the-dust

Another shot from the same day:

We've seen King's Tropical Inn on Wash Blvd here before, but finding the post is of course a pain in the a##.

Nevermind...found BRR's old post: http://skyscraperpage.com/forum/show...postcount=8536

Speaking of Culver City...

Culver City Historical Society

Who knew it was so colorful? The newest car I see is a 1960 Ford.

If you look in the middle of the street you can see one of those horrifically dangerous streetcar Waiting Zones. I can remember those when I was a small child and seeing all of the automobiles rushing towards us as my mother and I waited for a street car. It was absolutely terrifying and obviously dangerous as many people were hit and injured in these Zones.

Just imagine yourself standing in the middle of that street with cars flying by you. It was totally insane.

Another flooded street from around the same era as the recent flood posts. USC doesn't give a location, but it's Union Avenue looking toward Pico.

USC Digital Library

And here's what the view looks like today.

GSV

The domed building at the center is the Doria Apartments. e_r posted a couple of pictures of the apartments here.

The upper direction sign attached to the lamp post seems to say:

<- Los Angeles
Beverly Hills 4 ->
West Hollywood 6 ->
Hollywood 7 ->

...which would make a Culver City-ish location possible, looking at the overlapping circles.

-damn, you were able to read that sign?! -good eyes Lorendoc.

I realize GW pretty much knows every nook & cranny of Chester Place, but there's a tiny detail in this photograph that provides a glimpse
into the life of it's inhabitants.

circa 1900
ebay

-this detail? The bird in a cage set on the porch to soak in the California sun.

detail

-here's a detail (understatement) of the elaborate wrought-iron gate.
