Winter storm watch is now a winter storm and storm surge warning.

Quote:
Heavy snowfall with blowing snow is expected.

Locations: the northern Avalon Peninsula, eastern, and northeastern Newfoundland.

Total snowfall: 30 to 50 cm, locally higher amounts possible.

Maximum wind gusts: northeasterly 80 km/h.

Time span: Wednesday morning until early Friday morning, with the heaviest snow expected Wednesday and Wednesday night.

Similar storms in the past have caused:
- hazardous driving conditions
- school closures and cancellations of scheduled activities
- disruptions to public services

Remarks: Conditions will deteriorate quickly Wednesday morning as accumulating snow occurs in conjunction with strengthening winds.

Snowfall rates of 2 to 3 centimetres per hour are possible before gradually diminishing in intensity on Thursday. However, a stiff northwesterly flow and continued snowfall will continue to cause poor conditions.

As with all nor'easters, a small change in the forecast track results in large changes in the snowfall forecast. This alert represents the current most probable scenario based on the latest forecast guidance and analysis. This alert and corresponding local forecasts will be updated regularly with the latest guidance and analysis by Environment Canada meteorologists.

Poor weather conditions may contribute to transportation delays.

Consider postponing non-essential travel until conditions improve.

Winter storm warnings are issued when multiple types of severe winter weather are expected to occur together.

Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada. To report severe weather, send an email to [email protected] or tweet reports using #NLwx.
Quote:
Impacts from storm surge are expected, including coastal flooding, beach erosion, minor infrastructure damage, spread of coastal debris, and localized coastal road washouts.

Locations: Cape Spear to Deadman's Bay, especially northeast-facing shorelines.

Maximum Water Levels: exceeding high astronomical tide, with water inundating vulnerable sections of coastline.

Maximum wave heights: 8 to 10 metres, breaking upon approach to shore.

Time span: Wednesday night. Worst near high tide.

High tide: 11 P.M. Wednesday to 1 A.M Thursday.

Storm surge warnings are issued when water levels pose a threat to coastal regions.
Still lovely for now.

I'm starting to suspect there's a chance of a five-day weekend, or at least Wednesday and Thursday both fully snow days.

Forecast isn't changing much but the certainty that St. John's is in the bullseye and doesn't transition to rain keeps getting stronger.

-2C and partly cloudy in Moncton at 11 AM.

Best guess with the upcoming storm is that Moncton will get a paltry 2 cm in flurry activity, but, it will be windy so we will have some blowing and drifting snow.

This is a coastal storm. Pray for Halifax, Cape Breton and the Avalon.

The roads in Ott/Gat have been dry for days, almost spring like. I actually got a car wash a few days ago and it's still clean.

One crazy snowstorm will screw that up right away.

Meanwhile chaos reigns in Boston and New York from the latest nor'easter. Nova Scotia is in the sights of this storm for this evening.

Meanwhile, in Moncton, generally considered one of the snowier places in Canada:

Where is winter?

I feel like we've been dodging them, matrix-like, this year. How long will our luck hold?

Indeed. The storm track has always been to the north of us, or to the south this winter. We haven't had a decent blizzard all winter. I can't recall more than about 10 cm of snow on the ground at any one time.

Halifax's specific forecast says 15 cm from Environment Canada, The Weather Network is saying 10 - 15 cm. EC says southern Cape Breton will get 20 cm (any amount in CB will be too much).

The Winter Storm warning is saying 15 - 25 cm, and the usual caveat that a small change in storm track can make a large difference in amounts.

Meanwhile, I think eastern NL will be the ones getting snowmageddon this time... best of luck to them.

Latest forecast has 2cm overnight, 20-30 tomorrow during the day, 10cm overnight tomorrow night, and then it just says snow, blowing snow, windy for Thursday, and then periods of snow & windy for Thursday night but no amounts given.

Models have tracked a little further north so Nova Scotia may end up on the high end of their forecast.

2C and sunny. Beautiful! It's been decent the past couple of days weather wise. Wasn't paying attention though as I have been on a high after the Super Bowl!!! What a night that was!

Low of -5C (wind chill of -11) this morning.

The warmspot was White Rock, BC at 13.1C

Warmest low was Cape St James, BC at 5.8C.

I can confirm. The snow was been pretty intense and is piling up pretty good, aided by the winds, of course. The most recent storm warning upped the amounts to 15 - 30 cm.

The yellow band of intense snow hung over Halifax and across the province for a few hours. Looks like things are starting to slow down a bit, but I wouldn't be surprised if it swirls around again as nor'easters tend to do.

Yeah, the forecast said 15cm for Halifax, but the airport says already 29.2cm yesterday!

Metrobus has already announced it won't be running at all today. That's generally the final nail in the coffin where basically everything closes, even minimum wage businesses.

*****

EDIT: Yup. Everything is shutting down.

Except the one business that never does, and seems ostentatiously proud of getting his minimum wage-earning staff there in every storm.

Yes, because they might end up like that flight from Toronto, and get all the way to Mount Pearl and not be able to land and have to go all the way back (joke). I miss the snow days sometimes, even though we sort of had one recently.

-10C and partly cloudy in Moncton at 8 AM. It sounds cold, but, it is calm outside and thus surprisingly pleasant.

How much snow did Moncton get in this storm? Zip, zilch, nada........

The edge of the storm was almost precisely on the NS/NB border. Halifax got about 30 cm.

Life is good............
