My guess is that it'll be a few years before they start widening the 400 north of Hwy 9. This summer they installed new mounts for a full width COMPASS cms sign, and the mounts don't appear to be designed for a ten lane build out. From the looks of things (the sign itself isn't there yet, just the footings), it looks like it was just built for 8 lanes.

I think they're going to turn their attention to the Bradford Bypass after the 400 widening. There is a clearing contract set to go in the spring from the 400 east to Yonge Street.

Yes, I suspect as well. Honestly I hope the next widening contract on the 400 is actually through Barrie, but that has to wait for the Bayfield Rd interchange to complete.

Once the Bypass contract wraps up, the entire corridor will basically be widened from Hwy 9 to north of the Bypass however so doing a widening should be fairly "quick". Similar to through Barrie, where a lot of the bridge replacement and interchange projects are widening the existing highway platform already, so any widening project would be relatively inexpensive to fill in any remaining gaps.

Generally, for 2025 the Highway 400 widening is the only active capacity expansion under construction in southern Ontario, which is sort of remarkable for the current government's rhetoric on highways.

I think Dunlop goes starting next year. It will feature platform widening, but no new lanes.

Even Essa doesn't include a full widening at the underpass sites. There is still going to be a gap in the median, just like at Duckworth.

View looking westerly along the 409 from the Iron Road overpass. The 409 is set to undergo some reconstruction starting in either 2026 or 2027 and the two bridges (one pictured) that carry CN Railway spurs over the 409 are going to be demolished as part of this construction.

The trenched portion of 409 always reminds me of Autoroute Décarie.

I’ve been thinking that the overpass replacement at Nicholas Street and at Riverside Drive was a missed opportunity to widen the median from 3 m to 7.5 m.

Meanwhile, crews are installing new noise barrier and new retaining wall on 417 near Parkdale Road. It seems that, even if lane 4 will be reopened, there will be very little right shoulder.

The design element that I always find really interesting is the Belfast Road overpass. It's barely wide enough for the five lanes that are squeezed beneath it despite the fact it was fully replaced a few years ago.

Obviously when it was originally designed, they didn't envision having continuous auxiliary lanes between the St-Laurent and Vanier Parkway interchanges.

Looking at it in streetview - why did they even cut the shoulders back so much? It looks like they have extra space under the structure provided they build a retaining wall to cut back the slope underside of the bridge - especially since they build a large crash wall anyway. Or is that slope needed structurally? I swear I remember seeing examples where MTO has cut into that slope in the past.

I was looking at streetview, and I think maybe the Belfast abutments were re-used when the replaced the bridge. Which certainly explains why they weren't pulled back further.

The slope paving probably could have been pulled back further than it was when they rebuilt the retaining wall -- but that's sort of my original point -- I don't think they ever intended on having a continuous auxiliary lane between the two interchanges. The bridge definitely wasn't designed for that until after the fact.

The 409 and its industrial environs are a grim introduction to Toronto. I would like to see efforts made to beautify the more dismal parts of Toronto, such as the zone around Pearson (technically Mississauga), but the pols don't seem to give a damn.

Oh wow. I was on that overpass last night! It was a bit of a challenge exiting from the Northbound 410 to Derry Road as you really have to change lanes to the right quickly as collector lanes merge in not long before the exit. I stayed this weekend at the nearby Radisson Hotel on Derry Road.

It's nothing unusual near a large airport but I agree that the area's roadways could be made to look nicer.

Love both of those highway views. I miss the views from the 403 eastbound through Mississauga, the MCC skyline looks so grand from that direction.
