One more, with the appropriate song...

Oh me name's Abel Rogers, a shareman am I
On a three-masted schooner from Twillingate isle
I've been the world over - north, south, east, and west
But the middle of nowhere's where I likes it best

Where it's wave over wave, sea over bow
I'm as happy a man as the sea will allow

Theres no other life for a sailor like me
And to sail the salt sea boys, sail the sea
There's no other life but to sail the salt sea

Where the hell did you drive that would take 12 hours? I could get all the way to Montreal in that amount of time.

I went photographing icebergs. I went all the way to Bay de Verde, which is this far:

But I stopped in every little village along the way. From Kitchesus to Bacon Cove to Lower Point to Spaniard's Bay. EVERY SINGLE village. The blue route is the highway. But provincial roads go right along the coast around every single one of those peninsulas.

I drove for about 11 hours, and then when I got back to the TCH, it said "St. John's: 74 km", , so I only went that far out. But it takes that long to every scenic route.

And once in Bay de Verde, I came back the other side of the Northwest Avalon:

New Westminster is a very historic city. It's older than Vancouver and is the site of the original capital of Mainland British Columbia, before the island and mainland colonies were united. Every historic building you see is historic. The large one in the 3rd picture, called the Westminster Trust Building, is 103 years old. The only faux history I see in the pics is the large glass condo in the last pic, with the lower section being faux history. The building in the foreground of that pic, beside the condo, is (around) century old streetcar terminal converted to retail.

I struggle to detect sarcasm online... but I can't imagine how such a statement could be genuine looking at a Google Map.

But it's nice! I promise. The youngest towns in that stretch are from the late 1700s. It's just gorgeous!

And it's one of the very few separatist AND rural areas (those two things are usually mutually exclusive here), so I'm right at home.

The pink, the Rose of England shows
The green, St. Patrick's emblem, bright
While, in between, the spotless sheen
Of Andrew's Cross displays the white

So hail, the pink, the white, the green
Our Patriot flag, long may it stand
Our sirelands twine their emblems trine
To form the flag of New Founde Land

A most unexpected sight in Portland - the Fleur-de-Lys of Quebec. Federalist, though... judging by the other flags and their order. But I guess that makes sense, given the location. Not too many sovereigntists moving to Newfoundland.

LOL! I didn't mean just looking at that map I quoted but also the iceberg alley thread and the photos in this thread.

Right on, b'y.

Two more, from Bay de Verde - where Devereaux, Martinez, and Aucoin are "Newfie" surnames with streets named after them.

And the northern edge of the Avalon Peninsula. And the busiest fucking fish plant I have ever seen. It was like an Ice Caps game at Mile One. The "downtown" was packed, people parked on medians, hundreds milling around outside the plant.

I never knew Harbour Grace when it was living... I'm glad I got to experience Bay de Verde before it inevitably dies.

And one more... there was a bergie big right up against the quay, thick with gulls.

If you notice this brand, buy it. Let's get this town going as long as we can.

Wow, I haven't seen a single leaf on a single tree in Halifax yet. Only about 1/4 even have signs of budding.

Stupid.

After such a brutal winter and cool, wet spring this is the latest I've seen Calgary bloom in my life. Certain species like Mountain Ash have lots of leaves, but others are well behind. Oh well, better luck next year - I think lots of North America is this way in 2014.

Spring in southern BC is a lot warmer than NS. Coastal BC and NS converge around late May or June but in February-May NS is normally many weeks behind. The leaves started here in early April, but in NS late April is unusually early.

I have been seeing the odd tree with some green in the Halifax construction pictures going up, but they do look pretty "late" compared to what you might expect for this time of year.

I guess BC is the first province to see the spring.
