What's the story with concrete highways in Ontario? We don't have them in BC.

There is not even a single expressway made with concrete in the entire province of BC, really ?

While we do have a lot of them (the 407 being the most prominent) the majority of the highways are still ashphalt.

I like asphalt, smoother ride, and we do not have as extreme weather, so less freeze / thaw cycles, therefore asphalt lasts longer in the populated areas of southern BC (where all our major expressways are) than in other areas of Canada.

The I-5 to Seattle is concrete, but they are actually slowly replacing it with asphalt.

Most of Toronto's expressways have a concrete road bed even if they are currently surfaced with asphalt. For example, while drivers have never experienced a concrete riding surface on either the 404 or 409, both have concrete road beds:

Does anyone know the timeline for the new express lanes opening? It seems like they have been on the cusp of finishing that section for an eternity. I drive through there twice a week or so and it seems that there is always a snarl of traffic where the express and collectors currently merge.

^ My guess was that traffic would start using the express lanes sometime near the end of this month, or very early in July. That's not an official estimate or anything though.

From what I saw on Tuesday, it looks like there is a fair amount of work to do at the transitions from where the concrete surfaced express lanes end at either end of the project. Further, there were a number of "bump outs" to be poured linking the tall wall to high mast lighting supports. All construction access to the express lanes is provided by the westbound express ramp to Hurontario Street, so they can't completely close the central wall until all of the work in the eastbound express lanes has been finished.

They're getting there though.

It bring back memories, On my way to Sarnia in 2010 ... awesome smooth roads & looooong merge & exit lanes always impressed me much in that province

We really should have concrete highways in the higher elevations. The coquihalla highway is a perfect example of that. Instead BC chooses to use asphalt. I think it comes down to lack of funds and just plain old poor planning.

Washington State is currently repaving I-90 through the mountain pass (transition from western washington to eastern washington) with all diamond grinded concrete. Last much longer than asphalt and a quieter, smoother ride to boot!
