We're talking about this, it looks like a little building between the other two.

Oh, that. That thing would remove all windows on the inward facing floors 3-8. WTF?

Would love to see some floor plans for an explanation.

I know. It's a podium connecting the two towers.

looks can be deceiving. the design allowed the developer to squeeze in some windows

Which elevation shows that? Still doesn't really answer why it's there.

I've never seen a podium mini tower before to be honest. It's a bizarre design decision, especially with windows directly facing it only a few feet away.

It's not a mini tower. It just looks like a small building from certain angles.

This thing is tripping me out now. Until Harley gets a drone in there the only conclusion I can draw is that this looks like a terrible place to live.

It's student housing, so that makes the terrible living conditions ok?

I lived at Glengarry residence at Carleton in 1994. The elevator would frequently go into 'free fall' mode every once and a while.

It's looks like they were thinking 'Hey, since we are sticking these two buildings to these other two buildings, wouldn't it be neat if we stuck ANOTHER building between these two buildings?? Rideau Street is becoming a game of real life Tetris

A couple L shaped pieces and the whole block goes away!

That actually makes a lot of sense. So these are some kind of miserable common spaces?

Hope so I guess? I assume that weird piece is not as wide as the entire towers, but only three windows wide, so it could be a seating/study area that connects the two towers.

Wouldn't this whole area be 100x better if the next project (the one to block that blank wall) was like 41 floors or something? The density is great, the designs are questionable, but a well-designed taller tower would take all the attention away!

Wow, that is an amazing change. I remember staying at that uOttawa residence on the left back when it was a hotel (Quality Inn?) sometime in the late 90s. It felt like there wasn't much around the hotel in those days... now the hotel is dwarfed. The area sure has filled out. Although yeah, maybe not with the most beautiful buildings. But still.

D'uh the floorplans . http://webcast.ottawa.ca/plan/All_Im...ber%202014.PDF

My guess the developer needed more square footage after maxing out on height like with most podiums.
